The sitter, a very pretty young woman with brown hair and eyes, is posed in front of a red drapery, and is wearing a black jacket over a white dress with a neck ruffle. An interesting Mid-Century abstract on paper, 12" by 16" inside the mat, 18 3/4" by 23" framed, unsigned. The work could well date to the 1960's, the paper thin and slightly browned. I am not clear on the type of paint used; it is not simple watercolor. Could be a mix of some sort; the gold is metallic and the darkest portions have a gloss when viewed at an angle. Charles Brooking, 1723-1759, English. This oil on panel is a fine example of the early work of Charles Brooking, known as one of the finest British Maritime painters. It is 13" by 19" in a handsome newer frame (overall dimensions of 16 3/4" by 22 2/4".) The condition is good and it is signed indistinctly (as many of his paintings are) on the piece of wood floating in the lower front of the painting. He is listed in Benezit and his paintings sell for up to $400,000.

Very antique drawing of a building, maybe a hotel/drinking establishment combination, large for its time and place, dominating a street scene filled with a number of tiny yet interesting figures, including a drummer at right; two horses; and even a dog. This work, apparently unsigned, measures 9 1/4" by 13 3/8". The artist used a soft paper and some kind of gouache or tempera, which allowed him to show fine detail, as well as a light pastel touch in the sky...
