Watercolor on paper river fantasy scene set in the tropics, 10 1/2" by 22" and 3" wide circa early 20th century frame in very good condition, signed at lower right "W W COWELL" and dated 18(last two digits not easily discernible, possibly "189_" or could be "1879"). This is one of the rare works of painter WILLIAM WILSON COWELL (1819-1898), primarily an east coast artist who also was known to paint in the Great Lakes area, and, late in life, in Nova Scotia, Canada...

Orlando Norie (1832–1901), artist of military subjects, perhaps the most prolific painter of the British army in the 19th century along with Richard Simkin. It has been estimated that Norie alone painted well over 5,000 pictures. The work is by listed French artist GABRIEL ALBERT MARIE LEFEVRE. Not a lot of biographical information is available, but he painted landscapes and historical buildings in France in the 19th century. This work measures 6" by 8 3/4" inside the fine hand-drawn ornate mat, and 16 1/4" by 17 3/4" as framed...

Watercolor painting of a lake and scenic mountains, 6" by 8 1/2" (10" by 12" in simple framing with no mat), apparently unsigned, circa mid 19th century, likely English. The gentleman from whom I purchased this makes regular trips to England and brings back drawings and paintings which he sells, so, that is why I am fairly confident that this is indeed English. The work needs a mat at least although frame could be retained...

A small gem of a watercolor painting, the subject a traditional house in a landscape with trees, signed at lower right "F Diday fecit", ("fecit" Latin for "did it" or "made it"), circa mid 19th century. The work on laid paper measures 3 1/4" by 5 1/8" inside the beautifully hand drawn lines mat. Presently this is unframed...

Old oil on gray art board landscape painting, 6" by 9" (10 3/4" by 14" in modern day framing), signed at lower right in red in a tight old hand "O. Farsky" with the "Antwerpen" nearby. At first glance this looks like an American Hudson River style oil, with fine detail, a split rail fence, and the structures in the center left area, which look more American than European. Farsky was from Bohemia, receiving art schooling in Prague during the late 1870's...

A nineteenth century watercolor painting of high purple mountains looming above an arid landscape framed by two trees at right, unsigned, 6 1/2" by 9 1/2" plus 3/4" wide framing. Found in California, and I lean towards this being a view in that state, though it could be elsewhere in the West or even conceivably in a place like Italy. The houses at far left do not help to solve the riddle. The piece, glued to the backing board, is definitely quite old...

The painting, 11 3/4" by 15 3/4" inside the present mat, 18" by 22" in simple modern frame, shows the skill of its creator, with fine detail in the architecture, gondola, and figure, and the pink-orange light suffusing the scene...

A total of FOUR watercolor paintings, framed as pairs, in two frames, each watercolor 10" by 4 7/8", each frame 17 3/4" by 17 3/4". All of the watercolors are signed at lower left with initials "FD". Judging from the scenes, these are likely Northern European and of late nineteenth century date. Condition is excellent, one frame has a little nick at top right. Some research may help determine the identity of the artist.

A fine, highly finished and detailed watercolor painting of a seated lady on a patio, her large lute at her side. The setting is possibly a castle, as a tower in the background suggests. The artist signed at lower right and dated the work 1875. It measures 13 1/2" by 9 1/4" (16 1/2" by 12 1/4" in its attractive circa 1930's framing (note the old Jordan Marsh department store label from Boston on reverse--could have been purchased or framed there). Frame shows some wear on right hand side...

PAIR of watercolor coastal scenes, unsigned, circa 1880, on heavy quality watercolor paper, 11" by 18" inside the old mats (18" by 25" in identical framing), found in Essex, Massachusetts. I purchased these for their inherent quality, despite a few condition issues, and hoped to find a signature when I opened them up, but, did not find either signature or any other inscriptions. I imagine these are by a listed artist who worked in the Cape Ann region or in that part of coastal New England...

Large (22" by 36", unframed) pastel drawing on heavy paper, which has been in turn laid on canvas, signed at lower left center by the well-listed American landscape artist GEORGE DOUGLAS BREWERTON (1827-1901). The impressive drawing features a Hudson River School-like landscape with no figures, the hazy ball of the sun dominating the sky...

Watercolor on paper laid down long ago on a thin old board, the subject being fruit, including green and purple grapes as well as a melon, measuring 10 3/4" by 18 1/4" inside the mat (19" by 26 1/2" as framed), apparently unsigned, dating likely to the late nineteenth century. This is a fine example of American still life art of the period. I would imagine the unknown artist would be listed, due to the quality of the work. Condition is excellent, with fresh colors and no water stains or foxin...
