Original signed American oil landscape painting on stretched canvas depicting a showy Magnolia tree planted in The Soldier's and Sailor's Memorial Park which is an 1888 gift of Charles H Tenney to the town of Methuen, MA. This landscape is framed and simply titled: Magnolia. This impasto textured magnolia tree landscape scene is a pleasure to view each spring and summer.

In the background an impressive stone work First Congregational Church founded in 1729 and built in 1855...

The Portland Art Museum has very recently begun to put its holdings of prints of Haku Maki on its site. These cover a wide range of Maki art: from the very earliest days of his work until the 1980s. The listing is particularly exciting because it shows several very early prints I have never seen. These are shown in the first 3 images of this listing. In 1976 Haku Maki did his eight-volume San Mon Ban--a total of 96 different embossed images. These included many items Maki had just used, would use soon and used later. I first show images of two prints like those in San Mon Ban but slightly larger. Then two images of insects in San Mon Ban and then 4 images of insects long hidden in my archives--even to me. These might all be called Maki Lite...

Giovanni Battista Gaulli, Italian, 1639-1709, called Baccico or Baccicia. Italian Angels or Putti on Clouds plus a small portrait of a man is a charming example of Gaulli's work. It is 5" by 7 3/4" of pen and sepia brown ink on paper. Provenance is Leslie Hindman Auction, Collection of P Waite, English Collection until 1994, German Collection Basenge. Condition good upper life corner restored. Giovanni Battista Gaulliwas a painter of the Italian High Baroque verging onto that of the Rococo...

A Watercolor by the Listed Artist, Kathryne Hail Travis (1894-1972). Travis was a student of Randall Davey, George Bellows, and Kenyon Cox. Measures about 13 1/2" by 9 1/2" matt opening, overall frame about 21 1/8" by 17 1/8". Titled "Fall Aspens on Mon Jeau", Travis has written that "Pic is watercolor sketch in the field for large oil painting in Texas..." Nice example.

A French Poster that belonged to the actress Greer Garson. This was lent to the College of Santa Fe for exhibition when Garson appeared in the production of Madwoman of Chaillot. On the back Garson has written the information, shown in photo. Measures about 16 1/2" by 23 3/4", frame overall about 17 1/2" by 24 3/4". Appears to be attached to backing. Nice Art Nouveau Style and interesting provenance.

Rare early original lithograph by Adolph Dehn (American, 1895-1968), circa 1930. Offered framed under glass. Pencil signed, dated, titled, and numbered 17/30. In very good condition (light paper toning, no foxing or other notable issues). Adolph Dehn was one of the most important American lithographers of the 20th century. (the white streaks on the photos are reflections on the glass.)

This wonderful print was a gift to Daniel Tretiak and me on the occasion of our wedding in June 1964.

Wesley Elbridge Webber (American, 1841-1914) - White Mountains, New Hampshire landscape painting with pond. Oil on canvas. Late 19th century. Canvas size: 12 inches x 20 inches. Signed by artist in the lower left and on the reverse of the canvas. Condition: one small old repair to a puncture in the sky, with minor touch-ups. Offered in an antique silver leaf frame. Wesley Webber was a 19th century painter of landscapes and marine subjects in New England...

Charles F. Daubigny, French, 1817-1878, "Le Gue," Etching and drypoint, image size 9 7/8 x 13 3/8 inches, 1865, IV/V, Melot D.118, printed at bottom margin "Daubigny Sculp." l.l., "Sarazin imp. Paris" l.r. and titled "Le Gue" l.c., framed. This was Daubignys' third contribution to the "Societe des Aquafortistes", also exhibited at the Exposition Universelle", the world's fair of 1867.

In the mid-1960s, Haku Maki was firmly launching his career as an important Japanese print maker. He did a series of prints of which a long and key series was the Alphabet A – Z. In turn, the Alphabet was the first series of what came to be many series of prints, all of which Maki called the Poem series. Prints in the Poem series continued to be produced until 1972. He produced all of the Alphabet in 1966 or part of it in that year and part in the next...

Jean Baptiste Camille Corot, 1796-1875, French, "Paysage d'Italie," Etching, image size 6 x 9 1/8 inches, cat: Melot- C.7, later printing without Cadart lettering, possibly after it was removed. This is a very nice impression with wide borders, printed on a medium weight cream colored laid type paper. This atmospheric image from Corot's series of Italian landscapes is a great example of his ability to capture the life and movement of the scene with loose spontaneous lines and rich tones.

A Fine and Rare 1893 Etching and Aquatint by the Well Regarded Belgian Artist, Felicien Rops (1833-1898). Image size is about 3 1/2" by 4 1/4", sheet size about 7" by 10 1/2". Monogramed lightly F.R. in red pencil under image.

Original and unique terracotta sculpture of a seated figure by Irma Rothstein (American, born in Russia, 1896-1971), incised signature on the base, in excellent condition. This rare work measures roughly 11"h by 11"w by 7"d. Irma Rothstein is an American sculptor born in Rostov (Rostoff), Russia. She lived in Vienna before emigrating to the USA in 1938. A Fine Silkscreen Print by the Listed Artist, Herbert W. Pratt. This print, titled "Low Tide" was in the Museum of Modern Art, New York Exhibition of Color Prints Under $10 by American Artists in 1940. Signed and titled twice, in the print and in blue pencil at bottom. Print is hinged at top of matt. Matt opening measures about 20 1/2" by 14 1/2", overall matt about 28 1/2" by 22 1/2".

Haku Maki tried to work until he died; the last images were not pretty. They were printed first on very thin paper, which was then “wrapped” around heavy shikishi board. They are lithographs not done from wood blocks. From the late 1980s Maki had stopped doing embossed prints turning instead to collages and lithographed prints. These are among his last prints: Kyowa brand Shikishi board is made in Japan. Size: 9 1/2" x 10 1/2" (24.2cm x 27.2cm) There are two (2) pieces in one pack....

In 1990 Haku Maki produced as many as 6 different images of famed Mt Fuji(Fuji-san). Here are three, each one printed from a different block.
