This is an appealing little sketch, oil on board of a landscape with a line of trees, a tawny field, a few structures and an extensive view beyond, unsigned, circa 1940's or 1950's. It is obviously by a talented artist who failed to sign his or her name. Perhaps it is a study for a more finished painting to come. Found in New Hampshire, this is an antique unsigned watercolor of a rocky coastline, sailing boats on the horizon. Measuring 13 1/2" by 19 1/2", the work on paper is glued down to an 1893 Salem, Massachusetts legal directory, the edges of which are crumbling. Those edges should probably be trimmed, and the watercolor then framed to preserve it for another century. Though simple and monochromatic, this is a work well worth preserving. One corner is brittle.
