A truly beautiful circa 1890 print of elegant Parisians strolling past and perusing the famous Bouquiniste bookstalls along the banks of the Seine River, not signed in plate nor in pencil but certainly by a listed or even important and well-known artist. To date, reverse image searches and other internet research have, frustratingly, not revealed the identity of that artist. There are no watermarks...

From a set of lithographs, Paris Dans sa Splenour, published in 1861, titled, “LE NOUVEAU LOUVRE/Vue prise du Palais Tuileries.” The printer and lithographer are shown in details of the lower left and right corners. The image without printing is 9 7/8 by 14 ½ inches (25 x 27 cm), the page 13 ¼ by 19 ¼ inches (34 x 49 cm).

Condition; some rubbing to the surface and some of what look to be ink spots...

By the famous and prolific English 19th century dog artist EDWARD ARMFIELD (1817-1896), this is a classic painting of no less than three terriers chasing a rodent down a hole, and, apparently, finally cornering him there. The work, signed at lower left, is titled on the reverse overlap in the hand of the artist (also signed again nearby by the artist on the overlap) "Caught At Last" (great title!!). The oil on canvas measures 12" by 16" (17" by 21 1/4" framed)...

There is hand coloring of the blue sea, blue of the flag, and a little yellow and pink hue in the explosion on the foreground ship...

Scarce Currier and Ives lithograph print, sheet size 11" by 15", image area 8 1/2" by 12 3/8", titled "Prairie Hens". This is apparently a scarcer small folio image, as Cohenour prices it over $400 in his Currier price guide. The print is in acceptable condition, with the image area generally clean, and only one tiny spot of foxing visible, although there is a diagonal light crease at upper right corner, visible only when viewed in raking light...

From our European Collection, a wonderful signed and dated (1860) oil on canvas entitled "The Offering" by British genre painting master John Bagnold Burgess (1830-1897). Burgess was a well -accomplished painter of the mid-late 19th century, regarded as highly in his own time, as he is nowadays. He was nominated to membership of the Royal Academy in 1889, where he had over 70 paintings displayed from about 1850 all the way through to his death in 1897...

Oil on canvas, 18" by 30" (20" by 32 1/2" framed), the subject a very English one----a peaceful summery millpond or riverside scene of low, forested hills and their feathery trees, a small peaceful settlement, and a total of six figures, three out in a rowboat for an outing, and three tiny people gathered in the village of thatch roofed buildings, engaged in conversation, beneath a pretty sky...

A scarce and vintage 19th century framed lithograph on cardstock/board depicting two children carving a pumpkin. The picture measures 10-1/14" x 13-1/2" and it is in a gilt gesso 16-3/4 x 14" period frame. The print has various notations, including: FROM THE AMERICAN AGRICULTURIST, BF REINHART 1870, HENCKL & SCOTT (illegible), ENTERED ACCORDING TO ACT OF CONGRESS A.D. 1872 BY ORANGE, JUDD & CO. One of a number of Whistler lithographs I am offering: "Portrait of Stephane Mallarme", 1892-93, measuring 3 1/2" by 2 3/4", mounted with hinges at top corners and in a protective sleeve. A label of Davidson Galleries, Seattle remains with the print. There are several condition issues. There is a jagged paper tear of about 1" at upper left, extending roughly down the level of his ear, though, well to the left of it, in the unprinted area...

Oil on canvas painting of a peaceful landscape in England, 24" by 16", and with newer frame 2" wide, signed at lower right corner by the well known and prolific English late nineteenth century landscape artist ABRAHAM HULK, Junior (1851-1922). The scene is a rural idyll, with a clouding-over sky threatening a storm, feathery trees, a cottage at center, English ancient country church, chickens and cows, a stream entering the scene from the lower left corner...
