Large watercolor on paper European street scene with half timbered style houses and many figures going about their daily lives, 21 1/2" by 16 3/4" (an impressive 36 3/4" by 29 1/2" in its original Victorian Eastlake style framing complete with original sawn wood back boards), signed at lower left and dated there 1875 by the well listed English watercolor artist THOMAS COLMAN DIBDIN (1810-1893), and titled "Caudebec"...

Oil on canvas, 12" by 18" (15" by 21" as framed), the subject a subtly rendered impressionist scene of large trees by a wide river, with just scant human activity present in the form of a few figures in a tiny boat in the middle distance, and a structure on the far shore. Executed in a silvery, cool palette of grays, tans and greens, this is a typical work of the well listed Scottish artist ROBERT RUSSELL MACNEE (1880-1952)...

Oil on paper, irregularly shaped, maximum dimensions approximately 10" by 16" and 2" wood frame, signed at lower left "S. CIEJKA". I do not see a listing for this name, which appears to be of Polish origin. The painting is in oil on paper. I think from the looks of it, a date around 1940 would not be out of line, but it is hard to tell. The colors remind me of that period, and it is obvious that the piece is not from the late 20th century...

Oil on masonite portrait of a classic man of Bavaria with his traditional hat and shirt, 15 1/2" by 14" (23 1/2" by 21 1/2" framed), signed at upper left corner and dated 47 by the well listed German artist ANDREAS MITTERFELLER (1912-1972). The artist created traditional horizontal format landscape works which appear frequently at auction in Germany, but I see only a very few portraits or genre works in the records...

One of a number of William Russell Flint prints in my shop, this is a fresh and clean example of the fine color photolithographs issued for collectors over a period of decades. This example, published in 1939 in an edition of 306, is signed in pencil at lower right and bears the characteristic embossed blindstamp in lower left margin. The title is "Provencale Granary". The 1939 date would place this among the earlier prints in the long series that spanned decades...

In the style of the well known Gianni family of artists, is this watercolor painting of the famous trellised terrace on the world famous dramatic Italian coast, signed at lower right "A. Hunt" and titled there "Amalfi". The piece measures 7 1/4" by 13 1/2" (14" by 20" as framed). The work has some oxidation of the paper and a small dig hidden in the coastal promontory at right center but overall it has survived quite well, considering its travels without glass...

Oil on canvas laid on masonite, 20" by 30", unframed, signed at lower right by Italian artist R. J. Bertini, and dated 1902 (possibly 1912). The scene is an interior with a large hearth in the background, four men appearing as cavaliers or musketeers around a table, engaged in an animated conversation with an old woman, as a young shy woman looks on from the left corner...

Pencil signed and numbered lithograph print of a Civil War subject (Confederate soldiers with their flag, surrounded by gigantic black-eyed Susans), 13" by 11", 19" by 17" framed, by the well listed Louisiana artist ROLLAND HARVE GOLDEN (1931-2019). The juxtaposition of the oversized flowers and Confederate warriors is in keeping with Golden's self-described "borderline surrealism"...

The scene is obviously in the tropics or sub-tropics, there being palms and other exotic vegetation. It could be Bermuda, or, perhaps, somewhere in the Caribbean basin. The work is signed in pencil at lower right "J. Pittaway" and "'24 & '25" is adjacent...

Australian aboriginal art eucalyptus bark painting (the art itself 28 1/2" by 20 1/2", the mounting panel 35" by 20"), by listed artist GEORGE ANARAGAYURA (1934-), the powerful image consisting of two parallel crocodiles, surrounded by small fish, some tiny humans, and, I think, several other creatures less easily identified...

Apparently unsigned watercolor on heavy paper painting of an arid landscape in the American Southwest, including a distant mountain, barbed wire fencing at a dirt crossroads, and fading evening clouds, 14" by 17 1/2" as framed in a faux burl frame. When I first saw the image I was reminded of some of the watercolor art of Peter Hurd---the memorable scenes he painted of New Mexico. There is no evidence that he painted this one, but perhaps the artist was inspired by Hurd's imagery...

Although unsigned (and Detreville's output frequently WAS unsigned), the handling, subject matter and color palette strongly suggest the hand of the noted California painter. Watercolor on paper, unsigned, 11 1/2" by 19" inside the mat, 20 1/2" by 27 1/2" as framed, the subject a flotilla of impressive ships in a harbor, many of them flying the American flag. The artist is unknown, but was clearly a trained and skilled watercolorist. Judging from the steam vessels I would venture a guess that this would date to the late 19th century or early 20th. It's really a shame that the artist didn't sign it, because I feel it likely to have been executed by a listed or even...

Oil on canvas landscape, 10 1/2" by 18", unframed, signed at lower right and dated there 1894 by well listed American artist CHARLES HENRY MILLER (1842-1922). Miller became known for his impressionistic paintings of Queens and points all over Long Island, including East Marion, near the end of the North Fork (Orient Point area). He traveled to Europe in the 1860's and, inspired by the sights and culture, decided to abandon the medical career for which he was preparing, in favor of art. Miller...
