Mid twentieth century oil on canvas painting of mallard ducks in flight, signed at lower left "De Marcillac", the measurements 21 1/2" by 43", a several inch wide whitewashed frame available with the painting. This is a beautifully painted work that will be surely appreciated by the sportsman or decoy collector. There is a small bit of work visible on the net by an illustrator going by this name, but I cannot tie the piece to that artist...

This is an unsigned, unframed, double-sided watercolor on heavy watercolor paper, 14 1/2" by 10 1/4", one side featuring a partially nude woman with arms behind her head, a decorative flowered textile of some sort covering the lower portion of her body; the other side features an outdoor amphitheater nighttime performance---perhaps, it has been suggested, the Hollywood Bowl. The vintage piece was acquired from a large collection of art that came from the estate of Brooks Pettus (1918-2003)...

This is a fine drawing on heavy paper, the subject a young woman, in mixed media including pencil, red chalk, wash, and some white gouache for highlights, signed at lower right only with conjoined initials that could be "TH" or some variant of that. Below her portrait is a sensitively rendered pencil sketch of a hand and forearm, beautifully drawn...

Original scarce 1915 etching known variously as "Sunset Williamsburg Bridge", or, "New York, From the Williamsburg Bridge", signed at lower right margin in pencil by the important American etcher, illustrator, critic, author and teacher JOSEPH PENNELL (1857-1926). The sheet, unframed, measures 11 1/2" by 16 5/8". After the signature, the "imp." indicates that Pennell would have printed this himself...

Original scarce and desirable unframed 1915 etching known as "New York, From Brooklyn", signed at lower center in pencil by the important American etcher, illustrator, critic, author and teacher JOSEPH PENNELL (1857-1926). The sheet, unframed, measures 11 1/4" by 15 1/2". The artist needs little introduction, as he was one of America's most prolific graphic artists, having produced many, many etchings and lithographs, not to mention watercolors, oils and drawings...

This circa 1918 work is by artist Pierre Ori...

Scarce 1941 color lithograph print titled in the lower left margin "Babes in the wood" and facsimile signature in right margin by the noted California artist CONRAD BUFF (1886-1975). These prints are sometimes found with pencil signatures, and many were issued in small editions generally under 200 examples. I cannot be certain as to the edition size of this particular title...

A fine copper engraving of the year 1596, by the noted Old Master JAN PIETERSZ SAENREDAM (1565-1607), featuring young couples in a festive mood, in a Dutch town at the end of the sixteenth century. The print (Hollstein catalogue raisonne #133) is titled "Feiernde und Tanzende Junge Paare" (roughly, "Celebrating and Dancing Young Couples"). It measures 12" by 15 3/8" inside the present mat and the piece is 18 1/2" by 24 3/4" in the contemporary strip gold framing...

Vintage watercolor painting of a bridge, a brick smokestack in the distance and some trees at right, signed at lower right by artist E. M. Woodworth and dated there 1915. The piece as framed in veneer mahogany measures 17" by 20 1/2", the painting itself 10" by 13 3/4". Found in Connecticut; likely a northeastern scene. Simple and charming. Small chip to veneer at upper and lower right corners. Glass reflection at top.

**FOUR** identically framed early (1830) color aquatint engraving prints of classic English sporting art subject, the Grand Leicestershire Steeple Chase, 1829, printed by the noted R. Ackermann Jr. of Regent Street, London. The plates are from a series, though this is not a complete series; the group includes Plate 1, Plate 5, Plate 6, and Plate 7. They all measure 14" by 17 1/4" inside the framing (18 1/2" by 21 1/2" framed)...

PAIR of unsigned watercolors from Japan, one featuring a seaside beacon or shrine, the other small boats along a coast, a volcano (possibly Mt. Fuji) in the distance. The works were found intact and identically framed, but in shipping one frame essentially broke apart and may not be serviceable at this point. One painting measures 4 1/4" by 11 1/2", the other slightly smaller at 3 3/4" by 10 3/4" (and that one 9 3/4" by 17 1/2" framed)...

Fine decorative 19th century engraving print, titled at bottom margin "Philadelphia from Belmont (WEST PARK)", by English-born artist ROBERT HINSHELWOOD (1812-1879). Hinshelwood came to the United States in 1835 as a young man and pursued his art skills, in both painting and engraving. In this case he seems to have engraved after his own original painting---a fairly rare skill combination...

A **PAIR** of etchings, 21" by 17" as identically framed, one a still life of flowers in a vase in an interior, the other of a mother holding her child, only the floral work pencil signed, rather illegibly, at lower right (signature beginning with the "Sz...." common in Hungarian), and titled in Hungarian at lower left (as a Hungarian-speaker tells me) "Still Life" or "Flower Still Life". On the reverse backing of one is written in English "from Budapest--July 1966"...

Two antique prints circa 17th century, matted together, one featuring profiles of a man's head (6 1/2" by 9 1/2"), the other a study of a bare foot and a foot in a sandal (6 1/2" by 4 1/2"), the head profiles, originally drawn by Annibale Carracci (1560-1609) for his "Livre de Portraiture", subsequently transferred into engravings, likely by Jan Van Haelbeck (fl. 1600-1630) and published in Paris in 1667 by Francois de Poilly. Carracci's name is at lower left, and de Poilly at lower right. The ...

Interesting and unusual print by a so far unidentified artist, 10 1/4" by 8" inside the mat, 15" by 12 1/2" simply framed, the subject a white-haired fiddler seated in a chair. The Mark Twain-appearing man vaguely resembles figures you've seen in prints by Thomas Hart Benton, and the print REALLY resembles a work by artist Eric Bransby (born 1916), recently recognized with an exhibition at a well-known Denver gallery. I submitted images of the print to the gallery to ask them if they thought t...

A painting on light blue illustration board, sizable at 24" by 36" including its thin strip frame, signed at lower right by artist B. G. Dorsey. The subject is a white classic New England home with green shutters, pictured in early autumn, the trees turning colors. A lone figure seems to knit at the side of the house, a rowboat is tied up at the convenient dock, and a sailing craft and the ocean beyond appear at left. The idealized scene is classic Americana. It appears to be after American ...
