From our African Collection: Ivory Coast Figure, circa 1960. Côte d’Ivoire was inhabited in the Neolithic era and possibly earlier, although the humid climate has effaced most traces of the country’s earliest civilizations. Portuguese explorers arrived in the early 1600s, and French missionaries landed near the Gold Coast (Ghana) border in 1637. European contact was limited until the 19th century, mainly due to inhospitable geography along the coastline...

For the last four years, I have researched every aspect of this self-portrait to confirm its artist identity!! Today, I can confirm the artist of this self-portrait, it is ROY FOX LICHTENSTEIN!! I was able to match the 1956 signature to the “rather primitive notion of patterned linear repetition”, or unknown markings (which look like Hebrew) on the side of an airplane in the RFL’s drawing “AIRPLANE 1961”. Similar markings can be found on the RFL’s TEN DOLLAR BILL 1956 Lithograph...

Heyde, according to the Hughes' dictionary of artists in California). They are executed in pastel (or, oil pastel?) and measure 5 3/4" by 5 3/4" in original white circa 1950's framing. There is a label of the artist on the reverse backing of one...

Measuring 16 1/4" by 21 1/4" (23 1/2" by 28 1/2" in its attractive and clean modern gold frame with liner), this is a beautiful impressionistic painting in oil by the noted orientalist French painter LOUIS MICHEL BERNARD (1885-1962). The subject could be a sunwashed port in the mountainous south of France, or, possibly, in Algeria or elsewhere in coastal North Africa, where Bernard spent much time. The artist was a student of Cauvy at the Ecole des Beaux Arts in Algiers...

This is a stunning, classic plein air style seascape painting (24" by 30", 29 1/2" by 33 1/2" as framed) signed at lower left by California master artist HENRY LEOPOLD RICHTER (1870-1960). A probable original title, "SURF", is written on the stretcher. The handling of color, motion, and especially the balance of sunlight and shadow is quite impressive. Having viewed a number of other works by the artist online, this one really seems to stand out...

Watercolor landscape, likely of the world-famous view from the Nuuanu Pali on the Hawaiian island of Oahu, painted in a modernist wet-on-wet technique, signed at lower right "Richardson", and dated there '54. The artist's common name makes identification of the work's creator difficult, but the viewer can see the talent. The work measures 13 1/2" by 19 1/4" inside the mat, and 22 1/2" by 28" framed. It is taped at the edges to that matting...

A watercolor painting of what appears to be Lake Como or possibly other northern Italian lake, signed at lower right by American artist GLENN BUTLER, who was apparently associated with Indiana, he being said to have exhibited in 1957 with the Chicago Artists No-Jury Exhibition at the Art Institute. This work is back by an old gray Crescent art board. Measurements are 13 1/2" by 19 1/2", and 21 1/2" by 27 1/2" in whitewashed old frame that was probably hand carved and possibly even gilded at s...

This print, which appears to be rather scarce, dates to about 1960. It is after one of his most famous paintings, which I believe now rests in the collection of the San Diego Museum of Art. Hurd was born in New Mexico and attended military academy there before realizing he wanted to becom...

NOT a print, this is an original drawing of Humpty Dumpty in ink and gouache. The work measures 10 1/4" by 7 1/2" and 17 1/4" by 15 1/4" as framed. The character of Humpty Dumpty dates to the 19th century , and the "anthropomorphic egg" character has become one of the most beloved and famous in all of nursery rhymedom. The piece was likely dated in the mid 20th century. It would make a wonderful addition to a child's room. Condition is excellent.
