Large original signed bronze sculpture on wood base by Irma Rothstein (American, born in Russia, 1906-1971). Almost 20" high including base. In excellent original condition. Irma Rothstein was born in Rostoff, Russia, and studied art in Vienna before emigrating to the United States in 1938. She sculpted the busts of celebrities such as George Bernard Shaw, Hermann Broch, Alexandre Gretchaninoff, Ernest Hemingway, etc...

One of dozens of drawings by this artist that I recently acquired, (ask to see others, not shown in my shop) this is a sketch in soft pencil on paper, the drawing and frame 11 3/4" by 16 1/2", signed at lower right, and titled there in the artist's hand "On the Ways/Provincetown", by California and Massachusetts listed artist DAISY MARGUERITE HUGHES (1882-1968). Hughes was born and died in Los Angeles but in between she spent much time in the Provincetown art colony on Cape Cod...

From our African Collection: Bante Middle Ivory Coast Female Figure, circa 1950s.

This is a masterful drawing with a definite modernist touch, by well listed artist GENE McCOMAS (1886-1982), depicting a tropical house under palms, likely in the South Seas---the artist traveled to and painted Tahiti and nearby Moorea island. The artist was San Francisco-born, and is associated with the Bay Area and the Monterey-Carmel area, but she and her husband traveled extensively and obviously produced art in these exotic locations...

Oil on canvas, 24" by 36" (28" by 39" as framed), UNSIGNED, but certainly by the popular listed California artist HERBERT SARTELLE (1885-1955) (I will stand by this). This is a classic mountain scene favored by the artist (he seems to have painted that particular mountain over and over again), with large eucalyptus trees and a lake with distant mountains, all executed in Sartelle's unique impressionistic style and characteristic color palette. The painting probably dates to the 1940s or 1950s...

This is a Pair of WATERCOLORS signed by the ARTIST: R.E. HOLMES. From a Maryland Estate, suburb of Washington, DC. Bio of the Artist: Born in Rosedale, B.C., Canada on March 6, 1917. After graduating from Chouinard Art Institute in 1940, Rosinda Sellers went to work in San Diego in an advertising agency. The following year she married artist Rexford Holmes and moved to San Francisco into Maynard Dixon's old studio (later the Melvin Belli office)...

Vintage Austrian or continental Silvered or chromed Bronze Water Carrier After Alonzo Dominique but this image with only one water pot. The sculpture is cold painted red green and gold enamel similar to Austrian bronze. Period unknown . Size h 18" by 7" weight 11.5 pounds unsigned.

ONE OF A NUMBER BY THE ARTIST IN MY SHOP**This is a small etching (the sheet 7 1/2" by 5 1/2", respectably matted but not framed), by the noted California artist HARRIET GENE ROUDEBUSH (1908-1998), titled at lower left margin "Russian Hill" and pencil signed at lower right by the artist. The artist depicts a bird's eye view looking northwest from Russian Hill towards distant Mount Tamalpais in Marin County across the Golden Gate...

Oil on board, 14 1/2" by 20 1/2" as framed, unsigned, the subject an extensive hilly landscape with distant structures. I believe the scene is more than likely American. The painting could use a cleaning as there is discolored varnish, causing the colors to appear more brown and less blue/white in the sky. There is some soiling at top mostly and a small 1/8" or less pressure mark at center in the sky. Overall this painting makes for a pleasant and decorative landscape...

Impressionist painting of a small brook in a landscape, bordered by trees, the season perhaps early spring, suggested by the white ground-hugging flowers in the foreground. The unsigned work, on board, measures 19" by 14 1/2" (21 3/4" by 17" in attractive gold frame). The artist could be American, or European...there is old pencil notation on the reverse in American handwriting referring to varnish type. The work was recently cleaned and two hairline horizontal scratches were attended to...

Really well executed watercolor of a classic American town's streets and buildings, as seen from a bird's eye view on a gray, snowy winter day, 14" by 11 1/2" inside the present mat, unframed, signed at lower left by artist Warren Blackwell, and dated there 1948. It is surprising that there seems to be no information available on the artist, as his handling of the medium is so skilled and advanced...

Eye-catching patinated bronze swan statue on a black marble base.. This curvilinear design is reminiscent of the Art Deco period. The edges of the marble base are beveled and the corners are rounded; it all feels very smooth. Unsigned, there was green felt on the bottom that was removed, but enough remains that it will protect a wood surface from scratching. In excellent condition, it measures 16.12ʺ long × 4.12ʺ deep × 11.75ʺ high.

American regionalist painter Robert Walker (1920 - 1990) painted this study of 3 pears as a watercolor on heavy paper. The seeming simplicity of this work belies a great power of observation and sensitivity of even the most mundane.

This work was done in 1949, during the early years of Walker's career who was born in Alameda, California. His works often soar on the simplicity which made 20th century American justly famous...
