An example of the etching "The Complete Angler", by the noted English artist credited with creating the so-called "Etching Revival" of the latter 19th century, FRANCIS SEYMOUR-HADEN (1818-1910). The print is signed in the plate and lower right and dated there 1877, but was likely printed in the year 1880, in an edition of 1000. Measurements are 6 1/2" by 8 3/4" inside the present mat and 12 1/2" by 14 3/4" as framed...

This is a perhaps circa 1930's or 1940's work in an earlier naive style, with a fisherman, sailing craft, and cabin on the shore. On canvas, simply tacked to the frame on the reverse side, the piece measures 21" by 30 1/2". I imagine this could be called "cabin art". If you're looking for a primitive piece for a country home, or even your urban home, consider this charming work...

This is an atmospheric fine little watercolor on paper painting of mountains and water such as might be found in the idyllic Lakes District of the northwestern part of England, or the famed Scottish Highlands, unsigned, late 19th century most likely, measuring 4 1/2" by 6 1/2" (14 1/2" by 17 1/2" in the present framing). The work is in very fine condition...

Acquired as one of a number of works by late Bozeman, Montana artist MARION "MAL" LEWIS (1925-2010), this is a fine collage work of an orange-yellow painted cardboard sphere with overlaid and background cut blue printed paper, undated, not framed (just matted), likely from late in the artist's life. While traveling through Montana I came upon a group of mostly collage, abstract works by this artist, though there is at least one non-abstract work, a New Mexico drawing, that I will be listing...

Found in Southern California, this is a mixed media (colored markers and pencils) drawing on paper, 23 1/4" by 18", unframed, the subject a stylized seated obese woman. The artist signed her name at lower right and dated the work nearby "04". The name appears to me as "Greta A. Dietrich" or similar, but I do not see a listing under the various possibilities I have investigated---more research might turn up the artist name...

Oil on canvas spring landscape with a European Victorian-era mansion at left, and lovely trees and bushes in full spring finery filling much of the foreground, 8" by 10" (12 1/2" by 14 1/2" as framed, signed at lower right in the paint "J. Clymer". This is a actually a work by the noted English-born listed artist JOHN CLYMER (1932-), until recently unfortunately often confused with the American illustrator and painter John Ford Clymer (1907-1989)...

Contemporary watercolor of the famous Pirates Alley in the French Quarter of New Orleans, 10 1/2" by 6 1/2" (18" by 14" in newer framing), signed at lower right. The work is beautifully painted by a talented hand that I cannot identify. Condition is excellent. There is a little bit of loss in the frame at upper left corner and lower center, showing as red areas. Some gold paint would cover these. See many other works of New Orleans in my shop.

A watercolor painting featuring a street scene in exotic Cusco, Peru, the imagery of a steep walkway in the high altitude mountain city, a lone figure in classic, native Andean dress descending the steps, an extensive view of tiled rooftops, whitewashed buildings and churches completing the middle distance, as serrated mountain ranges fill the horizon. The 10 7/8" by 7 1/2" painting (15 1/4" by 12 1/4" framed) is signed at lower left "ORE" and dated there 1980. Condition is excellent...

Drawing on paper, 6 1/2" by 9 1/4" the scene only, 9 1/2" by 12 1/2" as framed, signed at lower right, followed by "fec. 1818" (abbreviation of the Latin word "fecit", meaning "executed", in that year). Try as I might, I cannot make out the name. I've tried Pfohl, Pfahl, Pigott, and so on. In any event, here's a drawing that has survived in excellent condition after nearly 200 years...

This is a very pleasing country landscape (9 3/4" by 13 3/4" inside the mat, 16 1/2" by 20 1/4" as framed), executed in watercolor on paper by listed 20th century British artist F.L. BLANCHARD. A kind Englishman has emailed me to inform me that the building in the landscape is what is known as an "oasthouse", commonly seen in Kent, and used for processing hops for the brewing of beer...

A painting of the California desert, painted in impressionist style, oil on canvasboard, 14" by 18", unframed, titled on reverse in old hand, "Palm Desert Cal. Smoke Trees". The artist was born in Illinois, working in St. Louis before moving to Southern California in 1918. He studied at Scripps College in Claremont east of Los Angeles. Wheeler started painting rather late in life, at 50, according to a label with biography affixed to the reverse side...

This small work is a gem of the naive and primitive school of Central America. Measuring 12 3/4" by 11 1/2" as framed, the painting is signed at lower left by the artist, MARVIN KELLY (GARCIA) and is dated there 1991. On the reverse is an affixed paper label of Galeria Josefina in Managua, Nicaragua, giving the title as "Laguna de Masaya"...

Watercolor and ink on paper painting of flowers in a pot, 15 1/2" by 11 1/2" (23" by 19" as framed), signed at lower left and dated 1970 by the well-exhibited, Chinese-born artist who goes by the name "Chinyee". She was born in Nanjing and educated in Chongqing during the time of the Sino-Japanese War (1930's). By 1947 as the winner of a scholarship, the artist was able to come to the United States for study. There during the Cultural Revolution in her homeland, she attended the Art Students ...
