Watercolor painting of an old-fashioned water/wishing well in a garden setting, early years of the century, signed lower right KO ASHIWARA. There is an askart listing for the name but an internet search has yielded little information; apparently he had some connection to New York so was an individual of Japanese ancestry working in America. The work is executed by an obviously talented artist...
A fine example of the work of Canadian-born artist who is most associated with California, ALICE BLAIR THOMAS (1857-1945). We see a composition in various shades of green, with sheep grazing under a tree in a peaceful scene. The oil on canvasboard measures 14" by 10" (21 1/2" by 17 3/4" in modern-day California style gold frame that has apparently been painted matte black). Thomas painted in the Toronto area in her early years, as well as in Europe and even India...
An early (early 20th century) unframed watercolor of the brick buildings of San Francisco's Chinatown, unsigned, 11 1/2" by 7 1/2", from the collection of a longtime San Francisco art dealer. The work includes a number of figures in traditional Chinese clothing, along with the ornamental grillwork of some balconies overlooking the street in these post-Gold Rush buildings. The artist could be any number of listed artists, or perhaps, a talented amateur. There is light foxing in the sky.
A fine little watercolor painting of a Vienna street scene, 4 3/4" by 6" (16" by 18 1/2" in attractive wood frame), signed at lower right by the noted artist FERI FERDINAND SCHWARZ (1869-1923). Watercolor on paper painting, 10" by 14" inside the mat, (18 1/2" by 22 1/4" as framed), signed at lower left "Nolte", and bearing a note on the framing paper suggesting this to be Hidden Harbor, Maine (the word "Southwest", as in "Southwest Harbor", being crossed out). I believe the scene depicted would be on the famous central Maine coast, on Mount Desert Island, best known as the location of Acadia National Park. The drawing is executed in ink with watercolor...
From our African Collection: Ivory Coast Figure, circa 1960.
Côte d’Ivoire was inhabited in the Neolithic era and possibly earlier, although the humid climate has effaced most traces of the country’s earliest civilizations. Portuguese explorers arrived in the early 1600s, and French missionaries landed near the Gold Coast (Ghana) border in 1637. European contact was limited until the 19th century, mainly due to inhospitable geography along the coastline...
