Oil on canvasboard panel painting of a scene in the French Quarter of New Orleans, 19" by 8" (24 1/4" by 12 1/2" framed), signed at lower right with what appears as "Dettick" or "Derrick". This work was likely created for the lively tourist scene in the French Quarter in the 1960's or early 1970's. It has been suggested that the artist is one "Dick Nick", who has been an active participant in the New Orleans Jackson Square art scene from the 1960's. Condition is excellent.
Small oil on canvasboard contemporary painting of high mountains in the western United States, or, possibly, Canada, unframed, 6" by 9", signed at lower left with what appears as "Wingsford", "Wingard" or similar. The painting is by a trained hand, the depth of the landscape and the majesty of the mountain captured with skill. The painting is in excellent condition.
Scene from a Noh play, published 1922-1926
Signed Kogyo on lower left, fan-shaped publisher’s seal, fine impression and color, visible woodgrain, lacquer printing on lower stage platform, light mica dust on edge of mountains, very slight wrinkles to lower corners, overall good condition
Oban tate-e: 10 x 14 ¾ in.
Oil on board painting of colorful flowers in a blue ceramic vessel on a tabletop, 20" by 26" (26 1/2" by 32 1/2" as framed), apparently unsigned, the work dating to probably the years around 1930. There is an old crack at upper right as shown, not especially visible to the casual viewer, and I note some flaking and unstable paint in the lower 1/4 of the painting (see bright yellow underpaint showing through----ask for more detailed photos of this).
Drawing of a nude woman lying on her side, 10 1/4" by 15" inside the mat, 16 1/2" by 20" in frameless protective framing, signed at lower right "Sean Mayten" or similar, and dated there 1-13-86. The artist does not appear to be listed, at least under that name or variants of it. He seems to have used perhaps grayish-tan silverpoint or other unusual medium to draw this on a pebbled paper. An artistic work with sensitive shading and line...
Old circa 1940's chalk portrait drawing of a young woman with red hair and striking light eyes, 22" by 16" (27" by 20 1/2" framed in green metal strip frame), apparently unsigned. This is one of several drawings I encountered by (I believe) the same artist. Two other drawings were signed, but illegibly, so the identity of the artist is a mystery. I think the paper might have been rolled at one time as under certain raking light conditions one can see soft horizontal, roughly parallel creases...
Watercolor painting of an elaborate Orthodox church on a rise above a lake in winter, a rowboat in the foreground, the work signed at lower right in Russian. On the reverse in ink is written the artist's full name, Sergei Nemirovski, and the date, 1998. Measuring 9 1/2" by 6 3/8" inside the mat (16 1/2" by 13 1/4" in simple wood frame), the piece is very clean and ready for the wall.
Watercolor and gouache painting of purple and white lilacs in a vase, unsigned, 12" by 9 1/4" (17" by 14" in pleasant quality antiqued frame with imitation wormholes). The work is laid down on a board. Colors are fresh and the piece is ready for the wall.
PAIR of unsigned watercolors from Japan, one featuring a seaside beacon or shrine, the other small boats along a coast, a volcano (possibly Mt. Fuji) in the distance. The works were found intact and identically framed, but in shipping one frame essentially broke apart and may not be serviceable at this point. One painting measures 4 1/4" by 11 1/2", the other slightly smaller at 3 3/4" by 10 3/4" (and that one 9 3/4" by 17 1/2" framed)...
An old watercolor of a street scene in Alsace (the portion of eastern France that borders Germany), featuring a well for water and a half timbered house wall, along with a pretty window with flowers in pots. The artist, AMELIE FOLEY-RISLER (1870-1947) signed at bottom left and the town is identified there as Niedermorschwihr, Alsace. The unframed watercolor, 14 3/4" by 11", is in excellent condition...
This is an etching on paper, 7" by 6" (12" by 9 1/4" framed) by Tennessee born artist JAMES CARL HANCOCK (1898-1966), titled "THE GATE OF THE LIONS NEW ORLEANS LA." at lower right and signed in pencil below and dated there 1939. This is a view of old French Quarter New Orleans by a talented etcher. Hancock was self taught and in 1938 a book of his etchings, drypoints and sketches was published. Known works today include scenes of Memphis, New Orleans, and Arkansas...
Watercolor painting on paper, 29 1/2" by 21 1/2", (37 1/2" by 29 1/2" framed behind Plexi, in simple gold metal framing), signed at lower right "Julia R. Ayres" (and copyright symbol and 1985 date). The subject is the world famous Grand Canyon in Arizona. Ayres might be a listed artist, there being another Julia Ayres on google known as an artist, but further research should be conducted to see if there might be a relationship...
A print of Pierre-Auguste Renoir's 1889 painting "A Young Girl with Daisies", 9 1/2 by 7 1/2" (18" by 16" in the attractive wood frame). The print is very glossy, as made---giving the impression of being on porcelain, or made as an enamel. The frame is likely of Mexican origin and is hand carved and gilded, making for an attractive combination. A work for the Renoir fan who cannot quite afford the real deal at a Sotheby's auction.
**ONE OF THREE ORIGINAL WORKS BY THE ARTIST IN MY SHOP**Gouache on thin board, 16" by 14", unframed, the subject a young girl wearing a flower-bedecked hat, signed at lower right by the listed California and Illinois artist MARGO ALEXANDER (1894-1965). This is a whimsical and very feminine subject that would be a fine addition to a lady's dressing area perhaps...
Young Flute Player is the title of an oil painting by Benedetto Luti from the 1720’s, now in the Hermitage. An earlier version by Luti depicted a young boy in a blue jacket without any instrument. This engraving, made by Victor Marie Picot was published in London in 1780 as Boy and Lute, obviously mixing up the motif and the artist (!). Contributing to this is probably the Walpole family crest having been pushed in between the letters of the title...
Drawing on paper executed in soft pencil, 7" by 8 1/4", essentially unframed (in a protective frame only), the subject an arid desert landscape butte under a crescent moon, the drawing signed at lower left "ARCH SINCLAIR". There is a listing for an Archie Sinclair (1895-), a student of Henry Keller. Sinclair is listed in many reference works. He is said to be associated with Oregon, so, this might be a scene from the dry eastern part of that state. Evidently he worked in the east as well...
Drawing, I believe in charcoal, 12 3/4" by 18 1/2" inside the matting, framed, but no glass, signed at lower left "M. Moss" and dated "March '93", the subject a large wooden house on a lake surrounded by mountains, small boats tied up in front. I think this is American but I suppose it could also be English; I'm undecided..........though, the framing suggests would make me lean towards American, as the reverse was backed by the typically American wood slats with knotholes...
A mid 20th century watercolor on paper landscape painting of craggy classical mountains and gnarled pines, signed at center left with characters. The work measures 14" by 19" (24 1/2" by 30", no glass).
Etching titled "THE GREEN SHUTTER NEW ORLEANS", signed with initials in the plate and in pencil by the artist in margin, the sheet 9 7/8" by 7 3/4", framed as found in narrow black strip frame of the period. Buell was a noted woman etcher, active from the 1920's through the late 1950's...
"William Hogarth" "The Man of Taste"
and
"Rich's Triumphant Entry" The Works of William Hogarth" as published by Baldwin, Cradock and Joy in 1822 with the original plates restored by James Heath, engraver to His Majesty. The Heath edition was the last to print directly from Hogarth's original engraved plates. All William Hogarth prints appearing after this date are copies of these original graphic works of art. Heath edition 1822 An original copperplate engraving — over 195 years old. Sheet ...
An etching with extensive watercolor depicting two arches of an old bridge with a house built on the pier between the arches, two men in red coats and a dog on the bank below the bridge and lane with trees and houses on the right. Titled along the lower margin to the left, “Part of the Old Bridge east Shrewsbury.” It is unsigned, but part of the old mount that is saved in a folder on the back of the present mount states that it is by Paul Sandby (British 1725-1809). The evidence that it is b...
Modernist still life of wine bottle, coffee pot, pan, flagon and other objects on a table top, arranged artistically and painted with a cubist feeling, unsigned, framed in strip framing, no glass, circa mid 20th century. If you admire Cezanne but can't quite afford one of his masterpieces, this might just be for you. The artist is unidentified but likely created this in the middle years of the century. The work is on wove paper measuring 19" by 24" and is affixed to foam board at top, the oth...
A sunny, somewhat whimsical impressionist oil on canvas painting, 27" by 20" (34" by 27" framed), featuring a metal simple table set against a wall, with potted flowers completing the composition. The artist "Alicandro" or "Ulicandro", signed at lower right. Condition is excellent, only very slight frame abrasions.
Painting on canvas of a corgi dog in a landscape that suggests the beach, signed on the reverse with initials EG, which correspond to Eric Gregory. The painting is titled by the artist "Corgi study". Condition is excellent. The artist has not only created a simple portrait of a corgi; it is art, considering the placement of the animal within the landscape----off to the side, rather than centered. Not exactly Rodrigue's famous Blue Dog---but possibly inspired? Measurements are 18" by 24" (no...
Grape 2 is one of Haku Maki’s depictions of fruit. This one is pure and simple and in good condition. It is 8.5 sq inches.
Original watercolor of a typical scene in the sub-tropical island of Bermuda, 9" by 13 1/2" (18 1/2" by 22" in its gold frame), apparently unsigned, probably executed in the early 20th century. The painting's subject is a pink-walled home at left with two palm trees growing in the yard, a view to the water at right center. The painting is laid down on a board, and the gold overmat is glued down on top of it, so, were there a signature/date, it is hidden by the mat. There is foxing visible pri...
Three fine engravings of Mount Vernon, Monticello, and Independence Hall, nicely mounted and framed together vertically. The framed piece measures 16 1/2" by 11". These appear to be the same images that appear on US currency, and the very high quality of the printing (intaglio?) is similar. One wonders if these have been produced by the Bureau of Engraving and Printing, either as printing proofs, or perhaps as official souvenirs to be sold in a gift shop setting. The detail is extremely cris...
An original turn of the century print, apparently from a publication of the era, featuring a cabman and an elegantly dressed woman walking away, signed at lower left corner by the noted Spanish artist FRANCISCO XAVIER (JAVIER) GOSE (1876-1915). This original lithograph is not behind glass and is loose in the current framing. The measurement of the sheet is approximately 12" by 9" (19" by 17" in the framing). There is a tear at top as shown, and a slight crease at right. Gose was born in Llei...
Lithograph on paper, 11 1/2" by 14 1/2" inside the mat, 19" by 23" as framed, (no glass), the title at bottom "The Peerless GOLDSMITH MAID, driven by Budd Doble./"THE QUEEN OF TROTTERS" UNRIVALLED IN THE WORLD." This is a popular, folky image of an apparently well known 19th century trotting horse pulling the single driver of the sulky. Since the print has traveled without glass, it has acquired a number of faults common to Currier and Ives prints, including water stains (especially at top rig...
Ink on stiff paper drawing, 11 3/4" by 9 5/8", signed at lower right "O. R. Shattuck --1917--" and in the lower right margin "LIVE OAK, FLA. FEB. 1917". The artist is OLIVER R. SHATTUCK (1887-1953). The subject is a boy or young man, possibly a black man, in a small canoe-like boat, deep in the heart of a classic southern cypress swamp, the Spanish Moss hanging form the trees and brush. Found recently in central New Hampshire, I am offering it as an interesting vintage piece of regional sou...
Woodcut entitled ‘Vates Sibyllinae’, showing three naked prophetesses next to a tree. This may be an early representation of the ‘Three Graces’ so fashionable in Renaissance art.
The print is taken from a Latin edition of Münster's Cosmography one of the most influential geographical works of the 16th century.
Sebastian Münster (1488-1552) was a cosmographer and professor of Hebrew who taught at Tübingen, Heidelberg, and Basel. He settled in the latter in 1529 and died t...
Etching or aquatint in colors, 18 1/2" by 23" (28" by 31 1/2" as framed), titled at lower left margin "Les Vieux (???)" and signed at lower right margin by the noted French artist PAUL EMAIL LECOMTE (1877-1950). Lecomte was born to an artist father and an art-nourishing environment. After attending the Ecole des Beaux-Arts and study under Fernande Cormon, he went to work for the government. While in his 20's he began to exhibit annually at the Salon des Artistes Francais, where he won medals ...
Oil on canvas, 18" by 12 1/2", unframed, signed at lower right "F M Shane", and inscribed on reverse of the canvas, "Loveland Canon/Road to Estes Park/Colorado/1925". This work is somewhat primitive but the artist has created an interesting painting. There is a listed artist Frederick Emmanuel Shane (1906-1992), a Missouri regionalist who also painted in Colorado; conceivably this could be an early work of that artist, for some reason signed "F M Shane". The painting appears to have been fra...
"William Hogarth" "Paul before Felix The Works of William Hogarth" as published by Baldwin, Cradock and Joy in 1822 with the original plates restored by James Heath, engraver to His Majesty. The Heath edition was the last to print directly from Hogarth's original engraved plates. All William Hogarth prints appearing after this date are copies of these original graphic works of art. Heath edition 1822 An original copperplate engraving — over 195 years old. Sheet size: approx. 19.5 x 25 inches s...
An American oil on panel painting, unsigned, likely circa 1920, unframed, featuring a landscape including a lake, some distant low mountains, and yellowing foliage in foreground suggesting autumn as the season. The piece measures 14" by 22". Surface is dirty---could really use a cleaning/varnish---and there is paint chipping along left, top, and bottom edges, as well as a small loss at left center in the foliage. Needs some TLC but the essentials are all there. On reverse is written "(May?) ...
Italian 20th century watercolor of old church or cathedral, 16" by 13" (27" by 23" framed), signed at lower left "Brunacci" or "Brunalli" or similar. There is no listed artist by these names, but the artist was talented in the medium and created a satisfying work. Condition is excellent. Age would be circa mid twentieth century----perhaps a tourist souvenir piece.
A vintage impressionist oil on canvas painting of a sunny fenced meadow, signed with initials "FB" at lower right, 10" by 14" (14 1/4" by 18 1/4" framed). The work came from a German-American family which had brought much art from the old country, suggesting a European origin. The painting is pleasant and easy to live with. A cleaning to remove light surface dirt would be beneficial, as would a new gold frame, the present wood one not flattering to the work.
PAIR of decorative oil on board paintings executed circa 1970, in the classical style of the 17th or 18th century, each 6 3/4" by 5" (12" by 10" in the frames), each signed "H. Muriel". The paintings are affordable and will nicely fill that small wall in need of some art. Frames have the slightest of wear, the paintings are in excellent shape.
"William Hogarth" Sancho at the Feast, Starved by his Physician The Works of William Hogarth" as published by Baldwin, Cradock and Joy in 1822 with the original plates restored by James Heath, engraver to His Majesty. The Heath edition was the last to print directly from Hogarth's original engraved plates. All William Hogarth prints appearing after this date are copies of these original graphic works of art. Heath edition 1822 An original copperplate engraving — over 195 years old. Sheet size:...
A contemporary painting by a talented anonymous artist, the subject a church stained glass window, with Gothic arches and impressive detail, including the names of the saints pictured. The work measures 14 1/2" by 11 1/4" (21 1/2" by 18" framed in black). Condition is excellent, I note a tiny chip at lower left frame easily painted black. The artist invested a lot of time in creating this and the former owner installed UV resistant glass to prevent fading. Allow for reflections in a few imag...
This attractive and interesting print is a cover of the November 19, 1897 issue of the famous Parisian literary periodical "Gil Blas", which was issued between the years 1879 and 1914. Named after Alain-Rene Lesage's novel, it was a popular read in the late 19th and early 20th century among the fashionable. It serialized famous novels before they appeared as books. This work, titled "Le Vilain Homme", is signed and dated in the plate, by the important Swiss-born artist THEOPHILE-ALEXANDRE ST...
Oil on board painting of a harbor with small boats, 11 3/4" by 14", (15 1/2" by 17 1/2" in stained oak frame), said by a handwritten note on the reverse to be Morro Bay in central California. The note reads "View of Morro Bay/by Mary Harrington on trip of California coast with friends Mr. & Mrs. Dan Castro 1961". The painting might be signed by the artist at lower right; difficult to see among the browned varnish. There is a listing for an artist by this name but I cannot determine if the...

A circa 1960's to early 1970's oil on board painting in earth tones of dark brown, tan and cream, unsigned, 9" by 22" as framed in black with gold and an orange velvet liner (pure 60's!). The imagery could be purely abstract though to me, a skyline and reflection of that skyline in water is suggested----such as Manhattan from the New Jersey side of the river. A very Mid Century addition to your interior.
Vintage watercolor painting of a swampy pond with a stand of woods in the center distance, signed at lower right by listed Massachusetts artist HENDRICKS A. HALLETT (1847-1921). The scene is poetic and very calming. Hallett was born in Charlestown, Massachusetts and studied in Antwerp and Paris before returning for more training in Boston. He was a longtime member of the Boston Art Club and the Boston Society of Watercolor Painters. Today the artist is best known for his marine and historica...
This is a difficult to describe painting----we see a beach on a summer's day, the blue sea beyond; budding clouds, a spiky yucca at left, and what look at first like children's sandbox toys in the sand, until it appears that maybe they're not children's sandbox toys. The "tower" at right looks more like a Greek islands windmill, the "sail" a takeoff from the yucca. There's also a starfish, a bucket, a brightly colored striped beach ball--and a difficult to make out signature. I would guess th...
Ink drawing "Wooded Road", measuring 11" by 16", unframed, circa 1930's or 1940's, signed at lower right by listed American artist ISOLDE THERESE GILBERT (1907-1986). There are two labels, discovered when the piece was opened up (frame is low quality and worn). One red-bordered label gives the artist name, work's title, and size; another, of The City Library Association, Springfield (MA) Museum of Fine Arts, again provides title/artist name. Gilbert was born in New York City and died in Danbu...
An old oil on canvas laid on board painting of the northern San Francisco waterfront around Fort Mason, along with a panoramic view to Angel Island and Marin County beyond, unframed, 11" by 14", signed at lower right "Whited". There is only one listed artist with the last name, an (Elva) Viola Whited of Texas, which internet search reveals likely birth/death dates of 1902-1983. This could be our artist or could be someone totally unrelated. Written on the reverse of the card to which this was...
Excellent STONE CARVING depicting a MOTHER with CHILD carried on her Back. From a WASHINGTON, D.C. Estate and the previous owner told me this piece was PERUVIAN in origin. The STONE is 5" Tall x 2" at the widest point. COLORS are GRAY,GREEN and a BURGUNDY Red. Zero Breaks, Chips or Cracks. GOOD LOOKING and UNUSUAL Work of ART.
Oil on canvasboard painting of a green coast, a stand of foreground trees in late autumn colors giving fine depth to the scene. The artist did not sign the work, which likely dates to the 1950's judging from frame and board. There is a small area of flaked paint in the trunk of the most prominent tree. Overall a nicely done work that would be improved with a gold frame. Measurements are 20" by 24" and 26" by 30" framed.
An antique drawing in ink and watercolor, 4 1/4" by 6 3/4" inside the mat, 11" by 13 1/4" framed, unsigned, featuring a rolling landscape with stand of trees and tiny figures. At left a full hay wagon is pulled by an animal; at center a couple walks together; at right, three others take a break and chat. This could possibly be an American drawing after an English etching. The materials and framing look American, the scene less so. What is certain is that this is an original work and not a pr...
Colorful contemporary Central American or Brazilian landscape painting of a hillside village with figures, animals, tropical vegetation and a church, 7 1/2" by 10 3/4" (15 1/4" by 18 1/2" framed), signed at lower left with what appears as "Mitaki". The work is highly decorative and in excellent, wall-ready condition. Considering the architecture, landscape, and black-appearing tiny figures, I would lean towards the work being of perhaps northeast Brazilian origin, (Natal or Salvador area).
Etching (5 5/8" by 7 1/2", 13 1/2" by 15" in pleasing old gold framing), titled on reverse label "Fishermen's Houses Saint Tropez", (French Riviera), pencil signed in the margin by listed California artist REGINALD WILMER VAUGHAN (1870-1958). The etching likely dates to about the 1930's or 1940's, I believe. Vaughan was born in Boston of blue blood stock (relatives were with George Washington at Valley Forge). He came to California in 1890, ranching in San Diego, then moving to Santa Barbara ...
Oil on canvas painting of a desert southwestern landscape complete with saguaro cactus, unframed, 16" by 20", signed at lower right "Robert Perkins". I do not see a listing by this name so offer the painting on its decorative values. It is in fair condition, with soiling, stretcher bar show-through/uneven canvas, and two very small punctures at sky on right in a cloud at a few inches above the signature. If you like the painting you could hang it as-is, or you could invest money to fix it up.
Oil on canvas, 16 1/2" by 28 1/2" (20" by 32" framed), the scene a Mediterranean California style courtyard garden complete with fountain pond, palms and other vegetation, signed at lower left by the artist, one Daisy Dean Lucas, and dated there 1938. A google search shows an interesting tidbit concerning a woman by that name in Kern County, California, estranged from her apparently wealthy husband and attempting to sue him in the year 1937. Other than this I do not see a lot of information on...
Black ink, red watercolor and white gouache drawing, unsigned, 22 1/2" by 15", unsigned, the figure playing a mandolin or lute, wearing poofy medieval-style pantaloons, and sporting a Dali-esque moustache. The drawing definitely has some age, maybe circa mid century. The camera somewhat overstates the color difference between top (more brownish) and bottom (less browned) half; I can't explain the variation. There are some edge flaws (short tears, old nail cuts) and at upper left there is some...
Galerie Charpentier Exhibition Poster for 1957 entitled Cent Chefs-d'Oeuvre de l'Art Francais, featuring the Manet painting Henry Bernstein enfant painted in 1881. Poster is very good condition with slight age discoloration around the edges. It includes a thin black utility frame which we have not photographed and only crudely cropped out of the image. The very high quality lithograph is printed by Mourlot Paris.
Galerie Charpentier was a renowned French art gallery established in Paris whi...
Oil on canvas laid on board landscape painting of a small structure by the bay or sea, several figures milling around, 12" by 16", unframed, signed at lower right corner by listed early California artist BENJAMIN RABORG (1871-1918). Raborg was born in Missouri but came to be known around the turn of the century in San Francisco for his painting ability. The nephew of early California artist A.D.M. Cooper, he painted a wide range of subjects, most prominent among them, perhaps, Indians in lands...
Original old photo of the imposing Palace of Fine Arts building in the Marina section of San Francisco, the photo originally in a brown tone, enhanced tastefully with light blue tints. The building was erected for the 1915 Panama Pacific International Exposition in San Francisco, and the complex is all that remains of the construction undertaken for that event. Today it and the park-like grounds remain a graceful and familiar part of the San Francisco urban landscape. The photo is in what app...
