By well listed HENDRIK GERRIT TEN CATE (1803-1856) is this 9 1/2" by 13" watercolor on paper painting (15" by 19" as framed), laid long ago to a card, the subject a few chickens pecking the soil in front of a ramshackle thatch roofed structure I would think might be a barn or out building, except for the telltale domestic woodsmoke venting from the roof. The painting is actually signed "H.J. ten Kaet" at lower left...

Old watercolor on paper painting, a study of trees by a lake, the artist likely American, circa 1920's, 13 1/4" by 8 1/2" inside the old mat, possibly signed at extreme lower right corner but it is indecipherable. There are old framer's instructions on the reverse side. The work was found framed and the frame is possibly available to the purchaser at no extra charge, but it is worn and tired. A fresh framing job will do wonders for this fine old watercolor painting.

When I first saw the image I was reminded of some of the watercolor art of Peter Hurd---the memorable scenes he painted of New Mexico. No listings were found for this artist, but the work appears certainly to be of English origin. There is fairly heavy foxing especially at top in the sky, and a small bar of lighter paper there. It appears that the artist signed in lower right corner and then tried to rub it out there before re-signing it two inches higher up.
