[1854-1941]
Landcape With Village Beyond
Oil on canvas 21 ¼” x 25 ½” unframed
Born in Paris, France in December 1854 to French-Italian parents, with the name Eugene Galiany. He later changed it as a tribute to his teacher Charles Laloue whom he studied with in 1877. During the early part of his career as an artist Galien-Laloue took on several pseudonyms because of an exclusive contract with a major gallery. These pseudonyms included L. Dupuy, J. Lievin, Lenoir and E...

Migata Toshihide 1863-1925-Battle of Anjoto “Gosai”1894, published by Sasaki Toyokichi 15x30” frame size 26x39
Old photo of a seaside Greek temple with Doric columns, 10" by 14" (17" by 20 1/2" in metal framing with mat). I am not a specialist in vintage photography, but this seems to have some age. There is some silvering at lower right. The print might have been created from an old negative with some damage as there are some white spots in the print that are not damage to the print itself----I imagine that this is disturbance on the original negative...
A really nicely done watercolor on heavy watercolor paper, the subject a New York Central Park view, the artist evidently looking south across a lake towards the famous San Remo Apartments residential building with its distinctive towers. Signed at lower right in Asian (Chinese?) characters and with red artist seal there, also signed and stamped again on the reverse side, where it is titled "Evening at Central Park #13" and dated March 31, 2008...

The artist is well listed, and is associated with California and the east coast, with askart noting exhibitions in Chicago and Palm Beach. He is perhaps best known for his modern and surrealistic paintings, but painted a wide range of subject matter, including clowns. Interestingly, a big collector of his work seems to have been none other than Noel Coward...
From our European Collection, a very good 17th century Italian School oil on canvas, 'Ecce Homo.' An enduringly poignant and iconic image of Christ in Pathos and everything else that this represents, it needs no further elaboration from us.
Size and Condition: Framed dimensions, 31.5 x 25.5 inches; Unframed image size is 25.75 inches x 19.75 inches. The painting has crazing / craquelure consistent with its 17th century age...
This is an oil on board painting of a small house in a forest landscape, apparently unsigned, in the general tradition of the Hudson River School, 13 1/2" by 21 1/2" plus gold framing about 1 1/2" on a side. The work could date from about 1900 to maybe the mid 1920's, I would think. It is a decorative work that gives the feeling of a more expensive painting, when viewed from a distance...
A classic painting of the West---a river in a mountainous piney landscape, (titled, probably in artist's hand, on stretcher, "Mountain Stream"), by the noted, well-listed California impressionist artist, JOHN ANTHONY CONNER (1892-1971). The oil on canvas measures 20" by 26" (24" by 30" in old hand-carved frame. The work is stamped on the reverse with artist reproduction rights notice; the piece likely dates to about 1945 or 1950...
An 18th or early 19th century painting of a noble gentleman, oil on canvas, 30 1/2" by 23 1/2" on the stretchers 35" by 27 3/4" framed. This work does not appear to be actually signed, though there is much writing in blurred old ink on the stretcher in old German hand, seemingly identifying the sitter. The old style script and the way the ink has spread into the wood makes it all difficult to read...
Oil on board floral still life, 9 1/2" by 7 1/4" (11 1/2" by 9 1/4" framed), signed at lower right by listed artist JANET EDNA GREENLEAF (some give birth date as 1936). Born in Indiana, the artist studied in the San Francisco Bay area and also lived for significant periods of time in Smithfield, Rhode Island. Her generally small paintings of vases with flowers, similar to this one, are often encountered especially in the Northeast...
**One of two works by the artist in my shop**, this is an oil on board painting of what appear as houses, rendered in rich colors, and in a firmly modernist style. The painting measures 11 1/2" by 14 1/2" and 15" by 18 1/2" in early gold framing. The work is signed at lower left in the paint. On the reverse side is a fragment, in poor condition, of another painting the artist evidently executed...

A rare opportunity to acquire a work from close to the heart of American naive painting in the folk art style: an original oil on board painting, 11 1/2" by 35 1/2" plus narrow dark green contemporary framing, signed at lower left by FRED ROBERTSON (1878-1953), and titled on handwritten label by the artist "My Hills of Home". Ernest Albert, NA, New Canaan, Conneticut, 1857-1946. This gorgeous impressionist landscape is a soft, beautiful pastel scene showing trees and hills under a light blue sky. It has lovely thick paint which shows off the artist's masterful brushstrokes. It is 8 1/2" by 10 1/2" housed in a fine antique deep gesso decorated 2 1/2" frame giving it overall dimensions of 15 1/2" by 15 1/2". Oil on canvas, 20" by 26" (25 3/4" by 32" framed), possibly but not necessarily an Illinois subject, by an Illinois-born artist who went on to notoriety in California impressionist Plein Air painting, ARTHUR HILL GILBERT (1894-1970). This is a rather early (likely circa 1925) work. Gilbert was born in Mount Vernon, Illinois, graduating from the Evanston Academy in 1913 and then going on to two years at nearby Northwestern University. In 1917 he attended the United States Naval Academy Officer's...
A very interesting portrait miniature of a gentleman. Done in watercolor on organic material, it shows a half length naive depiction of a man posed with his hand in his waistcoat. The overall "feel" of this work is that it was done in the en grisaille style, in spite of the color in the man's lips, his vest, and cummerbund.
Condition of the painting and simple metal frame is excellent (light areas at the edges are due to reflections off the chamfered glass), with a size of 2 1/4" by 1 3/4".
A beautiful GEOMETRIC ABSTRACTION BY ARTIST WALTER O’NEAL, Oil ON CANVAS , MEASURING 42” x 31”. Mr. O’Neal is an artist of many mediums including sculpture. This work explores many techniques of Italian Frescoes brought into a modern abstraction.
A 14" by 9 1/2" watercolor (25" by 20 1/2" framed) by a skilled mid to late 20th century artist, the subject the entry area and classic old style doorway of a 19th century American home. The obviously antique home features appealing details such small panes in windows surrounding the door, decorative wallpaper, banister and grand staircase. A charming added touch in the composition is what appears to be a cat curled up on a small rug at the base of those stairs, basking in some warm sun coming...

From her geometric series…… Anne Lane studied art at George Mason University in Virginia, completed her education at Saint Patrick’s college, Ireland, where she studied theology and philosophy. The tonal and contemplated intensity of her paintings reflect her 10 years spent working as an artist under the desert sun of New Mexico. Her vibrant style, resonant with color and baroque in detail, swoons its delight over her canvases. The subjects and themes of her art, reflect her fascination with...

A lithograph print of a typical northern New Mexican adobe house of the Santa Fe and Taos region, signed in the plate at lower center with what appears as "J Hill" and dated nearby 48. The black and white image measures 6 1/4" by 9 1/4" inside the mat, 15" by 17 1/2" in simple black wood strip frame. Not examined out of frame but appears very clean and fresh. I have not been able to locate a listed artist by this name that would correspond to this work.

A rare and signed portrait miniature by Charles Byrne. Done in an almost impressionistic style, the sitter is a blue-eyed woman simply presented in a white gown with fur trimming along the top edge. She is posed against a gauzy white background with blue tints to complement her eyes.
The miniature has a sight size of 2 1/2" by 2" and is in excellent condition. The backing paper of the painting has the following artist and sitter identifications: "Painted by / Ch Byrne / 1801 / Mary Lambor...
