Late 20th century oil on canvas including a central figure, bird, young women embracing, and flowers, unsigned, painted in the style of the renowned and world-famous French artist Marc Chagall. The work, unframed, measures 24" by 20". The creator was obviously familiar with the paintings and graphic work of Chagall. Very decorative alternative to having a Chagall print.
Daniel Tretiak, after publishing his book The Life and Works of Haku Maki in 2007, found that he had more to say about prints as they came into his life. And so, from time to time, he wrote Research Notes and published them on this site.
For Note 1, he wrote the following:
This is a collage of Maki prints depicting the tokkuri (sake bottle). We have added images of most of the prints here. Enjoy. Be Sure to CLICK Above as directed, please.
A beautiful unsigned portrait of a young woman that is in the style of the 19th century.
This is a pleasant unsigned oil on canvasboard landscape, 16" by 20" (20" by 24" simply framed), the subject a lake surrounded by low hills, a church at right and a few strolling figures at left. The work might be by an amateur or a listed artist but due to the lack of a signature the truth will never be known. There is a little even soiling consistent with an age of at least 40 years, and a small hairline abrasion at center which is not obtrusive...
Original deep etching and etching by Wendell H. Black (American, 1919-1972), first edition, in excellent unframed original condition, titled l.l. and marked A/P, also signed and dated l.r. This work was printed posthumously by Berkley Chappell and signed by the artist's widow Elaine Black. No edition was created during the lifetime of the artist. A second edition was produced by a former student of Berkley Chappell for the sons of the artist. For the whole story cf...
Mary II (30 April 1662 – 28 December 1694) was Queen of England, Scotland, and Ireland, co-reigning with her husband, William III & II, from 1689 until her death in 1694.
This is an etching on paper, 7" by 6" (12" by 9 1/4" framed) by Tennessee born artist JAMES CARL HANCOCK (1898-1966), titled "THE GATE OF THE LIONS NEW ORLEANS LA." at lower right and signed in pencil below and dated there 1939. This is a view of old French Quarter New Orleans by a talented etcher. Hancock was self taught and in 1938 a book of his etchings, drypoints and sketches was published. Known works today include scenes of Memphis, New Orleans, and Arkansas...
Gouache on paper painting (9 1/2" by 20", and 18" by 28" as framed) of the world-famous Rialto Bridge spanning the Grand Canal in Venice, Italy, signed at lower right and dated there 1889 by the well known American 19th century painter EDMUND DARCH LEWIS (1835-1910). The artist painted from Maryland to Maine, visited Cuba and Italy, and even apparently spent a short time on the Pacific coast at Monterey, California...
Oil on canvas painting of a pinkish jug and blue-green vase on a neutral background, 15 1/2" by 11 1/2" (17 1/2" by 13 3/4" framed in light wood) signed at upper left "K Petersen". The impressionist work is skillfully painted though I do not see any information on the artist. Condition is excellent---ready for display.
This is a 32 1/4" by 28 1/2" poster from California's "The Upstairs Gallery", showing one of Max Papart's colorful, cubist-inspired images, but as a bonus, there is an ORIGINAL FELT TIP PEN DRAWING by the artist filling the lower right corner, AND I am including a withdrawn library copy of the 1984 first English true monograph on the artist, by Roger Green. This monograph includes an original lithograph created just for the book...
Francois Charles Cachoud, French, 1866-1943. This gorgeous, lush night painting is Cachoud at his best. It is 25.5" by 32" in a stunning 19th C Gold leaf frame, with framed dimensions of about 35.5" by 42". It is fresh from an estate and is in good condition but needs a light cleaning and some touch up on the frame. A student of the great Gustave Moreau and Robert Delauny, he competed in the Salon de Paris, 1892 through the 1940's...

This is a work by highly regarded American artist THOMAS WILLOUGHBY NASON (1889-1971). Nason was a Boston-born artist who by the late 1920's had taught himself the fine art of creating prints in the wood engraving process. This process was popular for illustrating books in the 19th century but by the twentieth it had fallen from favor. He revived the medium and truly excelled at it. By the early 1930's he had been exhibited at Boston's prestigious landmark Goodspeeds book store...
I thought this at first a print, the detail is so life-like and convincing, but closer examination revealed that it is indeed an original drawn work on paper, measuring 9 1/2" by 7" (15" by 13" framed). The artist must have had tremendous patience, or lots of time on his or her hands, to have created each leaf and flower. The work probably dates to the 19th century...
