This attractive and interesting print is a cover of the November 19, 1897 issue of the famous Parisian literary periodical "Gil Blas", which was issued between the years 1879 and 1914. Named after Alain-Rene Lesage's novel, it was a popular read in the late 19th and early 20th century among the fashionable. It serialized famous novels before they appeared as books...

An original turn of the century print, apparently from a publication of the era, featuring a cabman and an elegantly dressed woman walking away, signed at lower left corner by the noted Spanish artist FRANCISCO XAVIER (JAVIER) GOSE (1876-1915). This original lithograph is not behind glass and is loose in the current framing. The measurement of the sheet is approximately 12" by 9" (19" by 17" in the framing). There is a tear at top as shown, and a slight crease at right...

An example of the 1957 poster of a seated nude, titled "Andre Derain Dessins", by Galerie Maeght. The lithograph is framed in a silver metal frame with orange backdrop. Measurements are 25 3/4" by 18 3/4" (30 1/2" by 24 1/4" as framed). Derain was a major French artist in the first half of the twentieth century, renowned early on for his Fauvist works and later for a wealth of works, both drawings and paintings, many of which depicted the female nude. Pastel Painting on Paper in Frame, 22 1/2" x 16" (frame size), 17 1/2" x 10 1/2"(Painting size), snow capped high mountain and some Castle ruins in the background, beautiful Castle complex can be excessed from the land, and sailing boat in the lake, such beautiful peaceful surroundings. Frame and mat is around 1970's, the painting is older, no damages for the painting and frame. Belongs to private collection in DC area.

An early pencil drawing of a charming country house (barn/hayloft?) with thatched roof, a group of figures conversing outside. A pair of mules, a split rail fence, and plane tree complete the scene. The work is unsigned. Measurements are 8 1/2" by 11 1/2" inside the mat. Someone decided to re-use a modern mat that had evidently been used on a print, as there are numbers on it as if from an edition...

Watercolor painting of a harbor, probably Maine, signed at lower right corner by artist M. Matheson and titled in pencil on the reverse, appropriately, "Quiet Harbor" (with original $35.00 price). The work, on heavy watercolor paper, measures 15 1/2" by 22 1/2". It having slid down under the mat due to the old tape losing its grip, I removed this from the mat and frame, which are (possibly) available at no extra charge. The fairly ordinary frame measures 22 1/2" by 27 1/2"...

Oil on canvas, 18" by 12 1/2", unframed, signed at lower right "F M Shane", and inscribed on reverse of the canvas, "Loveland Canon/Road to Estes Park/Colorado/1925". This work is somewhat primitive but the artist has created an interesting painting. There is a listed artist Frederick Emmanuel Shane (1906-1992), a Missouri regionalist who also painted in Colorado; conceivably this could be an early work of that artist, for some reason signed "F M Shane"...

Three fine engravings of Mount Vernon, Monticello, and Independence Hall, nicely mounted and framed together vertically. The framed piece measures 16 1/2" by 11". These appear to be the same images that appear on US currency, and the very high quality of the printing (intaglio?) is similar. One wonders if these have been produced by the Bureau of Engraving and Printing, either as printing proofs, or perhaps as official souvenirs to be sold in a gift shop setting...

Watercolor on paper painting of waves lapping at rocks in the ocean, 9" by 12", unframed, signed at lower right in blue by well-listed California artist GEORGE DEMONT OTIS (1879-1962). The simple scene of waves lapping at a rock is simple yet complete. The artist was born in Memphis, Tennessee and was raised in the Midwest after being orphaned. He showed early talent and was enrolled at the Art Institute of Chicago at 14, followed later by more training in Philadelphia and New York...

A highly detailed nineteenth century PENCIL DRAWING, NOT A PRINT, featuring a classic turreted castle, with numerous (approximately twenty) figures completing the scene, unframed, 7" by 9 1/8". The artist signed at lower left corner "F. Pohl", and "1846" is written on the reverse. Nearby are two blue stamps that could be collector stamps. Condition is excellent, needs a frame.

Oil on canvas, 16 1/2" by 28 1/2" (20" by 32" framed), the scene a Mediterranean California style courtyard garden complete with fountain pond, palms and other vegetation, signed at lower left by the artist, one Daisy Dean Lucas, and dated there 1938. A google search shows an interesting tidbit concerning a woman by that name in Kern County, California, estranged from her apparently wealthy husband and attempting to sue him in the year 1937. Other than this I do not see a lot of information on...

Watercolor painting of a dramatic western American mountain, unframed, executed on a 12" by 17 1/2" sheet of watercolor paper, unsigned. The mountain resembles the pyramidal Going to the Sun Mountain in Montana's Glacier National Park, but I suppose this could be elsewhere in the great American west. Condition is excellent; the work needs only framing.
