Oil on canvas painting of a farmer by a water pump in an open field, two dray horses at center and left slaking their thirst. The work measures 11" by 12" and 15 1/2" by 16 1/2" in frame that may well be the original. The painting is signed faintly yet distinctly at lower left corner "S.S.C.", which is one of the known signatures of American artist SAMUEL SIMPSON CARR (1837-1908). Other known signatures include "S.S. CARR" and "S. CARR"...

Unsigned fine old nineteenth century ink and watercolor drawing of a great tree presiding over a pleasant forested landscape, two tiny figures at right and a small wooden structure at left providing the only evidence of human presence. The watercolor, 14 1/2" by 10 1/2" inside the mat, 24 1/2" by 21" framed, is probably English or continental European, and circa 1860's or thereabouts. An antique truly American painting (not the more common similar-looking English scenes) with feathery tree at left, a few simple wooden houses, distant church steeple, and two tiny central figures, a manageable size at 22" by 30" (29 1/2" by 37 1/2" in the likely original framing), apparently unsigned. This old work came out of a dilapidated local home, having no doubt hung there for decades. When found it had a sheet of glass over the canvas...

This is a **PAIR** of fine old works, (each 9" by 19 1/2", 17" by 27 1/2" as identically framed in old gilded oak), both coastal scenes, likely Rhode Island, including both steam and sail vessels on the horizon, tiny fisherman, and wood building at right in one. Each is signed at lower right and dated there 1906 by the well known American 19th century painter EDMUND DARCH LEWIS (1835-1910)...

A 19thC framed watercolour picture of a child 1860-80. This late Victorian period unsigned framed water color on paper is a piece of early memorial folk art and it was possibly made by a family member as a reminder of a deceased child, with typical muted colours and austere pose...

Watercolor and gouache on paper of a backwater creek or lake surrounded by feathery trees, 12 1/2" by 19 1/2" plus 3 1/2" of mat and frame, unsigned, most likely American. The work is in very good shape save for some age browning of the paper most visible by comparing to the top inch or so which evidently at one time was hidden under a mat. The artist was obviously skilled in watercolor. A very peaceful scene for your wall.

Watercolor en grisaille drawing of the ornate entry area of a 19th century American home, complete with trellis, shutters, clapboard and fine woodwork, unsigned, measuring 18" by 14" (20 1/2" by 16 7/8" framed in brown wood frame. There is also a pencil study of the doorway on the reverse (see last photo). Any number of artists could have created this. It reminds me of a home you'd see in a watercolor by Edward Lamson Henry. I'd date this to about 1910 through 1930...

Oil on thin board painting of a canal with figures, boats and adjacent sun-drenched buildings, possibly Venice, unsigned, measuring 6 7/8" by 11 1/2" (13 1/2" by 18" in attractive old frame). Whether Venice, Italy, or another Mediterranean locale, this is nicely executed by a trained hand. It could well be by a listed artist but without a signature it will be difficult to place the hand. The work is slipping around loose under the gold mat and it needs to be framed with acid-free materials...

Gouache on paper painting (9 1/2" by 20", and 18" by 28" as framed) of the world-famous Rialto Bridge spanning the Grand Canal in Venice, Italy, signed at lower right and dated there 1889 by the well known American 19th century painter EDMUND DARCH LEWIS (1835-1910). The artist painted from Maryland to Maine, visited Cuba and Italy, and even apparently spent a short time on the Pacific coast at Monterey, California...

Oil on canvas Italian scene of the famous Bay of Naples with smoking Vesuvius volcano, unsigned, circa 1880 to 1900, measuring 18" by 28" (23 1/2" by 33 1/2" as framed). This is a charming scene, painted many times since the 17th century, of fishing boats in the bay, the backdrop being an ornate tower at left, distant houses on hillsides, and at right the curling smoke plume of simmering Mount Vesuvius...

I thought this at first a print, the detail is so life-like and convincing, but closer examination revealed that it is indeed an original drawn work on paper, measuring 9 1/2" by 7" (15" by 13" framed). The artist must have had tremendous patience, or lots of time on his or her hands, to have created each leaf and flower. The work probably dates to the 19th century...
