A charming antique oil on canvas of a young girl cozied up in a doghouse with a snoozing bull mastiff dog, signed (incised in the paint) and dated 79 (1879). The signature is JH SHARP in capital letters. For a number of years there has been confusion as to whether these 19th century dog paintings of this period were by the noted Taos, New Mexico artist Joseph Henry Sharp (1859-1953), as the signatures are very similar indeed, and the artist did study in Europe before coming to America...

A nicely executed watercolor, on natural material, of a gent in a black coat with white stock and ruffled shirt. Presented in the original gilt metal case with hair work under glazing on the reverse.

The overall condition is fine, with some tiny dust motes under the glass. The white areas circling the top half are reflections from the chamfered cover glass. Overall frame size is 2 1/4" by 2".

A nicely painted miniature portrait on organic wafer. The sitter is a young gentleman with blue eyes, attired in a white shirt, black tie, jacket and vest. The background is a pleasing shaded blue. Set in a gilt metal case with an unglazed aperture on the reverse.

The cased size of the painting is 2 1/2" by 2". The painting is in excellent condition, with no cracks, bowing, or restoration...

A fine miniature portrait on natural wafer, done en grisaille in watercolor and ink against a blue background. The sitter, an older woman wearing a lace cap and fichu, is beautifully limned in profile, an uncommon approach. Housed in a gold plated metal frame with fabric on the reverse.

There are no condition problems with the painting, which measures 2 1/2" in diameter.

PROVENANCE: The well-known Dr. Leo Catzenstein Collection, and thence to his descendants.

A miniature painting done in watercolors on natural material, signed "C. Greiner along the left center. The sitter is a gentleman dressed in the clothing and hair style popular in the 1841 to 1844 period. Presented in a cast foliate case, the reverse being engine turned with a glazed aperture containing a braid of hair and engraved with the initials JLD.

The painting and the case are in excellent condition with no issues. Overall size of 2 3/8" by 2"...

An oil on mahogany panel of a Claudian landscape with trees to the far left above figures approaching a river, while figures on the opposite side stand beneath a rise in the landscape with mountains in the distance under a cloudy sky. A Very Rare/Fine Korean Water Color Painting by Won Suk Yeon(원석연-元錫淵-1922-2003): “A Young dancer playing a Korean Salpuri in white and red dress” Korea, circa 1960s, framed, and painted on paper elaborately, and signed the artist’s round seal “원석연-元錫淵 ” in Korean stamped on the lower left. It's in fine condition, and it measures 29.5cm x 39cm (11 5/8" x 15 1/4").

(ONE OF SEVERAL BY MERRIAM IN MY SHOP) An oil on canvas, 25" by 30" (28" by 33" framed), the subject a California mountain in late afternoon light, feathery eucalyptus at left, the painting signed at lower left by the talented California painter JAMES MERRIAM (1880-1951). This example is very typical of the artist's work. Merriam was born in Canada and was studying in Detroit, before arriving in Southern California...
