One of a number of Whistler lithographs I am offering: "Firelight: Joseph Pennell No. 1", 1896, sheet approximately measuring 13 3/4" by 10 1/4", currently in a mat, taped at top edge, though not laid down, unframed. Generally clean, with some imperfections along edges. This is a medium folio size (lithograph 12 5/8" by 15 1/2" inside the mat, the sheet " by ", and as framed 20" by 22 1/2") by famous American printmakers Currier and Ives. Judging from internet offerings of the image by major print dealers around the nation, the print is a popular one, although it is not among the so-called "Best 50". Note the horses, the ducks and pigeons, the turnips, and the hogs at left. All in all, this is a peaceful scene of another America in another century...

A highly decorative item that will be certain to gather attention, an original 1896 lithograph by the father of Art Nouveau and giant of the Belle Epoque in Europe, Czech artist ALPHONSE MUCHA (1860-1939). The work will appeal to collectors looking for a purely decorative addition to their home or office, as the print at some time in the past was laid down on foamboard and also radically trimmed to the custom shape now outlined by the light blue inner mat...

Lithograph print "The Tyresmith", 1890, featuring a Chelsea (London) wheelwright's shop, by JAMES ABBOTT McNEIL WHISTLER (1834-1903). Forges and smithies are said to have been a lifelong favorite subject of Whistler. My research online suggests that this example is one of the 500 to 1000 examples printed from a transfer stone, to be published in The Whirlwind 2, no. 20, issue of November 15, 1890...

Oil on canvas laid on masonite, 14" by 11" and 3 1/2" wide frame, signed at lower right "C. DE VRIES". This is a pleasing work showing a young woman of central or alpine regions of Europe, holding in her hand a typical felt hat of the area, a window at rear letting in natural light that beautifully illuminates the subject. I have researched this name and find one listing that appears to correspond to the signature, one Belgian artist CAMILLE DE VRIES (1854-after 1924)...

Japanese Silk Painting- Shogun and Geisha. Framed Silk Painting. 14 x 40"
While we have yet to identify the artist or the subject, we would contend that the work is first rate considering the mood captured by the painter. The man exudes a somewhat austere aristocratic brood, yet exudes the strengths of youth and ambition, a man ready to make his place in the world.
We believe the work to be of the British school painted c. 1850 or earlier as suggested by the early Victorian shape of the seat rail...
This is a charcoal with white highlights fine original drawing of a male head on a plinth, the head appearing as would a Greek or Roman marble sculpture. A color lithograph of a 18 century gentleman by Thomas Marshall Smith in color, measuring 24 x 20 framed, dated 1901
A late 19th century etching of a young woman, measuring 5 3/4" by 4" inside the mat, the laid paper sheet 10" by 7 1/4", and 19 1/4" by 15 1/2" nicely framed, with a monogram in the plate at right center and an illegible pencil signature at lower right that appears to begin with "J". As the work somewhat resembles some portrait etchings by the famous artist Whistler, and the monogram almost appears as an early Whistlerian "butterfly" before it evolved, I thought the work possibly by Whistler...

L'Ermitage has been lauded by modern commentators as the exemplar par excellence of the Art Nouveau movement, especially with respect to posters which played a significant role in publicizing and glamourizing its artistic expressions. One of its leading practitioners and exponents was Paul Berthon (1872-1934), a French commercial artist who supplied 3 prints, including his masterpiece l'Ermitage, for the highly acclaimed subscription based French serialization of Art Nouveau lithographed posters...

From our European Collection, a very fine oil on canvas by British painter William Robert Symonds, signed and dated 1875. Symonds, who lived from 1851-1934, was a genre painter known for touching scenes of people and animals, and most often of small children in random snapshots of everyday life, where he captured well their innocence and curious musings. His works are carried by several UK- based institutions, most notably the Colchester and Ipswich museums, and in his day, he was often exhibit...
Large folio size print, sheet measuring 18 1/4" by 24 1/2" inside the mat, 27 1/4" by 33 1/2" as framed, titled at bottom. This image was produced by Currier in 1868, but I believe this example to be a high quality hand colored RESTRIKE of a later date. It's a great image, with grandparents in their snug Victorian 1860's New England interior, a roaring fire and their granddaughter indicating the other seasons of life. The print is in excellent fresh condition; allow for reflections in glass....

This is a hand colored lithograph of the species Petroica Goodenovii (the Red-capped Robin, of central and southern Australia), drawn by the famous 19th century English naturalist, ornithologist and natural history illustrator JOHN GOULD, the lithographic plate produced by his assistant Henry Constantine Richter (1821-1902). Gould's prints of hummingbirds are most likely his most popular, but over a period of many years, especially in the 1830's and 1840's, he produced a number of major works o...

This is an example of one of the more desirable and scarce Currier and Ives images, the "Skating Scene--Moonlight" of the year 1868, the image measuring 7 3/4" by 12 7/16", the sheet a somewhat irregularly cut 9 1/4" by 13 7/16". The work is lightly taped to backing at the top corners only, so, it is not laid down; however, the condition is only fair, with narrow margins generally (just below the title at bottom, and widest at top, at about 5/8" or so, and the sides roughly 1/2" or a little les...
Most would see this work as an etching or engraving and never give it a second look----but, it is, amazingly, an original ink on paper drawing (I guarantee that), measuring 23" by 16 3/4" (34 3/4" by 28 3/4" in dark old oak frame). Floating troubadours in their gondola serenade an upscale looking couple at right, as two other figures seem to be appreciating the pretty spring or summer day. The drawing is signed at lower right with what appears as "C J Meancon", the first letters conjoined. Su...
Jean Baptiste Camille Corot, 1796-1875, French, "Paysage d'Italie," Etching, image size 6 x 9 1/8 inches, cat: Melot- C.7, later printing without Cadart lettering, possibly after it was removed. This is a very nice impression with wide borders, printed on a medium weight cream colored laid type paper. This atmospheric image from Corot's series of Italian landscapes is a great example of his ability to capture the life and movement of the scene with loose spontaneous lines and rich tones.
A very old watercolor painting of a barefoot young man with traditional clothing and conical hat, unframed, 7" by 3", unsigned, dating to the mid 19th century. It could be by a local artist of the China Trade School, or perhaps by one of the rare expatriate artists who visited the region, on the order of George Chinnery. Without a signature we cannot be sure of its authorship, but it is clearly antique. It has some flaws to go with its great age, including an old brown stain in the hat and ei...

Reginald Cleveland Coxe, American, 1855-1926, "Home Again". This is an atmospheric scene of a ship coming into port, pulled by a tugboat; it is rendered with remarkabley delicate lines and a rich yet quite subtle tonal range, giving a strong sense of a soft morning fog over calm waters. The canvas sails of the ship beautifully contrast with the steam of the tug as is dissipates into the misty air. The image measures 19 x 23 inches, published in 1887, pencil signed on the lower right margin. "Cop...
