One of dozens of drawings by this artist that I recently acquired, (ask to see others, not shown in my shop) not many with any color, this is a fine image in soft pencil and a little color crayon on paper, the drawing itself 12" by 18 3/4", in an oak frame without mat, signed at lower left by California and Massachusetts listed artist DAISY MARGUERITE HUGHES (1882-1968). Hughes was born and died in Los Angeles but in between she spent much time in the Provincetown art colony on Cape Cod...

Somewhat reminiscent of Wayne Thiebaud's paintings of California's tangled freeways, this is an ink drawing with touches of white gouache, 8 1/2" by 11" (13 3/4" by 15 3/4" as professionally mounted and framed in a light ashy wood), signed at lower left and dated there "Aug '01"by noted, recently deceased California artist ZOLITA SVERDLOVE (1936-2009). This monochromatic drawing captures the essence of the California freeway and its mark on the landscape so familiar to millions...

Original 16" by 18" ink on paper drawing of two men in slickers in an overloaded canoe in a rainstorm, their faces reacting to the increasing challenges as they are apparently taking on water, signed at lower right by the noted American illustrator HENRY "HY" SUMNER WATSON (1868-1933). The drawing was evidently produced for eventual publication by Outing Publishing Co., as their violet "PAID" stamp dated April 10, 1907 and "Book Department" appears on the reverse...

A large graphite on heavy paper drawing, likely a sketch study for a subsequent painting, 18" by 24" (26 1/2" by 32" framed), signed at lower right and titled "USS Los Angeles" by the artist, the noted California-associated, British-born artist ARTHUR EDWAINE BEAUMONT (1890-1978)...

Original ink on paper drawing of four ducks in flight over a swamp or marsh, circa 1930's, signed at lower right with initials "P.Z.", which appears to correspond with inscription on backing "Painted or sketched by Paul Zeeze". At top on backing, is written "James Zeeze". Online research suggests the name may be found in Minnesota, which would make sense with duck habitat. Measures 10" by 6 1/4" inside the mat and 14 3/4" by 10 3/4" in black strip frame.

Brown chalk drawing of a mother and child, 11 1/2" by 7" (14 1/2" by 10" framed) signed at lower right by artist MAXIM BUGZESTER (1910-1978). The artist was born in Stanislov, Poland (present day Ukraine) to Ruthenian-Jewish parents. He grew up in Vienna and began an art education there. Bugzester became a student of the important German expressionist artist Karl Schmidt-Rottluff (1884-1976)...

A striking, complex drawing suggestive of three dimensionality, in rich teal blue and black, violet and gold, with strategic cut-outs revealing the white backing, 25" by 38' in the plastic enclosure box. The work does not appear to be signed but a fading label on backing gives the title as "Turquesa" ("Turquoise in Spanish) and the artist as JUNE SOBEL (1950-). Sobel was born in Queens, New York and grew up on Long Island...

Pastel, chalk, and charcoal on a dark taupe paper, this drawing of a nude woman is strikingly beautiful and sensual. The frame measures 17" x 21" and the sight size of the image is 9" x 11", and it is double matted with a creamy yellow and brighter white mat, with a mahogany colored wood frame. Unsigned, it was attributed to Arthur Bowen Davies by a previous owner who owned several from this era, and one other was signed...

Acquired as one of a number of works by late Bozeman, Montana artist MARION "MAL" LEWIS (1925-2010), this is a crayon drawing of a landscape with trees and a small body of water, 8" by 11", (loosely attached to a white mat), likely dating to late in the artist's life. While traveling through Montana I came upon a group of mostly collage, abstract works by this artist, though there is at least one non-abstract work, a New Mexico drawing, that I have listed...

Heavy pencil on paper drawing, 6" by 15", unframed, signed at lower center and dated there '91, (see another very similar drawing I have listed), by the noted contemporary sculptor, ceramicist, designer and painter PETER SHIRE (1947-). This complex modern drawing is imaginative, three dimensional, and whimsical, and could only have been created by a true artist...

Mixed media (charcoal and white gouache highlights) drawing of an American military man, in formal U.S. Army uniform, 14 1/2" by 11 1/2" (20 1/2" by 17" as framed), signed at lower right by the well known artist and illustrator associated with New Mexico and the Southwest, BETTINA STEINKE (1913-1999). Steinke's oils and drawings of native Americans, cowboys and other figures of the southwestern part of the country can bring into five figures...

A PAIR of drawings of the famous Hagia Sophia Mosque and environs of the Golden Horn as seen from the Bosphorus in moonlight, in Istanbul, Turkey, each 5 3/4" by 9 1/4" (11" by 14 1/4" identically framed), one signed in white ink at lower right corner "P. (or "G") Azaroff" and dated there 1925. The atmospheric handling, including contrasty light, demonstrates the skill of the artist...

Three drawings in pencil on gray-blue paper, each 7 1/2" by 12" approximately inside the mat, all of coastal scenes with multiple figures, sailing ships and even dogs and donkeys. Two are signed with the "W C" initials and are dated Nov. 1866; the third one with conjoined initials is titled "Falmouth" (a city in Cornwall, on the southwest coast of England) and is dated 12 June 1867...

This is an original ink wash on paper drawing, 12" by 17 1/2" (17 3/4" by 23" as framed shadow-box style behind Plexiglas), the image featuring a voluptuous nude woman and a bull that looks positively Chagall-like, signed at lower left corner by the highly important American twentieth century sculptor artist, REUBEN NAKIAN (1897-1986)...
