By the important Austrian twentieth century illustrator, draftsman, art critic, stage designer and author KURT MOLDOVAN (1918-1977), this is an original ink drawing on paper, 10 1/2" by 8 1/4", unframed, signed at lower right and dated Sept. 56. The subject is a lobster or similar crustacean at right, and at left another creature with a dinosaur-like head appears to be clutching a banana-shaped object. Moldovan was born in Vienna and died there before age 60...

Also identified by two labels from Denenberg Fine Art, Boston, verso. 17" by 13" work alone, 20" by 16" in frame. Isidor Ascheim is an important Israeli artist who studied in Breslau with Otto Mueller and Fryederyk Pautsch. He emigrated to Israel in 1939. His works are in the collections of a number of museums.

This is a beautifully executed work in charcoal, 18" by 15" (19" by 16" as framed), the subject a young girl, staring out at the viewer, likely wearing her school uniform, circa 1930's or 1940's, I am thinking. Unfortunately there is no signature. When I first saw this I thought it possible it might be by a Taos and Santa Fe master.......and I held on to it for many years, thinking I could run into another work that would unlock the mystery...
