DALE NICHOLS (1904-1995) is an American artist best known for his lyrical paintings of Midwest Heartland homesteads and farms in deep winter. These coveted paintings sell for mid to upper five figures at major New York auctions. Oil on canvas, unframed, 30" by 40", the subject large boulders and rocks surrounding a small pool of water, executed in a photo-realist style in muted colors, signed at lower left with the artist's name, copyright symbol, and date 1985, and titled "Slow Water" and signed again on the reverse. This is a relatively early work by the noted Twentynine Palms, California contemporary artist and muralist CHUCK CAPLINGER...

The Artist is the Victorian Jane Webb Loudon (1807-1858), and the Print is from the book “The Ladies Flower Garden of Ornamental Bulbous Plants” (plate 12), published in 1841 by Day and Haghe London, Lithographer to Queen Victoria. This print is Haku Maki’s 78-6 水Water, number 108 in an edition of 151. Earlier that year,1978, he had already produced dramatic single-kanji large black and white prints. The first two, 78-1 Mountain and 78-2 Water, both horizontal prints, were 17in W x 9.25in H. They were followed soon after by 78-6, also horizontal. But this depiction of the kanji for water is nearly twice the size of the previous two: his 78-6 is 32.5 inches wide and 17 inches high (83cm W X 43.5cm H)...

This is a work so finely executed that it is difficult to believe that it is a drawing and not a print, but I absolutely guarantee it to be an original drawing. The subject is a priest or monk in an interior nook flooded with sunlight. He is holding a large pair of scissors and appears to be concentrating on a domestic task that is not quite clear to the viewer. At bottom in very poorly spelled German is the phrase "UEBERALL--LOCHER--IM--KIRCHEN--GUT--DA--TUHT--KAIN--FLICKEN--MAHR"...

An interesting painting of a brick church dramatically positioned in a rural landscape with distant mountains, the year 1898 appearing on the lintel over the door, signed at lower right corner "K. Shuck". Online research shows there was a Kenneth M. Shuck associated with the Springfield Museum of Art, having served as its second director, between 1951 and 1976. A 1954 photo online shows him standing in front of a Thomas Hart Benton painting. This may be by that individual...
