All Items : Fine Art : Paintings : Watercolor : Pre 1900 item #1421670 (stock #JB03375)
Watercolor painting of a flock of sheep in a landscape, the central figure in blue with his black sheep dog, signed at lower left in ink rather illegibly, and dated there 1900. The work measures 9 3/4" by 19" inside the mat and 17 1/2" by 26 3/4" in excellent condition modern gold frame and clean mat with inner fillet. I have tried my best to figure out the identity of the artist and cannot do so; the artist might be anything from Belgian or Dutch to German or Eastern European...
All Items : Fine Art : Paintings : Pastel : Pre 1910 item #1419590 (stock #JB02490)
Pastel on paper drawing of a rocky coastline with sailing craft offshore, apparently unsigned, 9 1/4" by 23", (16 3/4" by 31" as framed), circa 1900. The style of the drawing is reminiscent of that of American artists like Alfred Thompson Bricher (1837-1908). The popular and common pastel art of William Chandler also comes to mind. The work needs a new mat and the old acidic wood backing is best replaced. Otherwise for its age this work is in excellent condition.

Pastel drawing of a mountain landscape, 9 3/4" by 14 1/4" (17 1/2" by 21 1/2" as framed), signed at lower left corner with the name "I E Cutler". The scene is likely to be of Colorado as there is an old framer's sticker from Turner Art Gallery of Denver. Below that is what appears to be a date, in pencil, "2-19-31". Even though the frame is mid century, it appears that the old original backing paper with label was retained when the work was re-framed...

Contemporary oil on canvas painting of the desert, 9" by 12" (15" by 18" in gold frame with linen liner), painted in an impressionist hand with the skilled use of various beautiful shades of blue, signed at lower right and dated there 1994 by contemporary artist RUTH OSEID JOHNSON, an oil painter and printmaker with Minnesota roots who spent years living and working in California and Arizona. In her work, she focuses on the effects of light in interior settings and in landscapes...

A painting of the famous Andes mountain and lake resort of Bariloche in central Argentina, oil on canvas, 22" by 29", unframed, signed "MA" at lower right and "M. C. Alsina" on stretcher, circa 1960. The work is dusty and could benefit from a cleaning to remove foxing in the sky, and has some paint losses that can be easily restored (scratch at left and lower extreme corner). The deep blue of the sky against the gray of the mountains and lake makes for an elegant and satisfying color pairing...
All Items : Fine Art : Paintings : Oil : N. America : American : Pre 1970 item #1416005
Painting on board of quail and black Native American pot, probably Santo Domingo Pueblo or Santa Clara Pueblo (??), 8" by 10" (13" by 15" framed), signed at lower right by listed western American artist HAROLD WATT (1925-). Watt was trained at the Jepson Art Institute and also at the Art Center School of Design in Los Angeles. Instructors included Rico LeBrun, Lorser Feitelson, and Francis DeErdely. Watt worked for the Hollywood studios and also commercially as an illustrator...
All Items : Fine Art : Paintings : Acrylic : Pre 2000 item #1488516
A modern unsigned painting, likely acrylic, the complex surface obviously worked and re-worked and built up by the artist----the piece, unframed, weighs nearly 9 pounds; that is a lot of paint. The measurements are 30" by 24". Despite the thickness of the paint, that paint appears to be stable. The generally monochromatic colors, bluish-gray/black, reminding of volcanic cindery glass, with other color showing through, should work well in a number of contemporary settings...

This is an antique photograph of earlier days on Charlotte Street, in the very historic town of Saint Augustine, Florida (which dates to 1565). For a long time I suspected this was Saint Augustine but recently I saw another example of this photograph, and in the margin it was titled "Charlotte Street, Saint Augustine". Charlotte Street is a block in from the ocean front road, in the old center of the town...

A very finished, beautifully executed pastel of a middle-aged lady, she nicely coiffed and elegant in appearance, the work signed at lower right "CARLES". I have researched the work, (including contacting an acknowledged expert on well-known Pennsylvania artist Arthur Carles Jr. 1882-1952) and she does not feel it has the characteristics to enable it to be called the work of that noted American painter. It is offered as a nicely executed portrait drawing...

An unusual offering: a print of some type, appearing as lithograph but not, perhaps a Heliogravure or similar, with HAND COLORING IN PASTEL, the oval-shaped card on which this is created measuring 20" by 16", the entire wood apparently original early oval frame measuring 26 1/2" by 23 1/2". Research indicates this is after a Renoir original work "Portrait of a Girl Wearing a Charlotte", circa 1900, now in the collection of the Musee d'Orsay in Paris...

Watercolor and ink drawing of a stone house adjacent to a dirt road on which a horse is pulling a buggy, a split rail fence, trees and a cow completing this bucolic scene of times gone by, the art in an oval, vignette style, the painted area 5" by 6 1/2", 13 1/2" by 15" in modern framing, possibly signed at lower left but definitely dated there either 32 or 34. This is a very, very early drawing...

This is a museum poster or flyer issued by the Long Beach Museum of Art in 1972, advertising an exhibition that year of the paintings of the important and still highly underrated Swiss-California modernist HANS GUSTAV BURKHARDT (1904-1994). The unframed sheet measures 24 1/4" by 18", and bears the complementary signature of the artist in blue ink at lower right just below the black area of the central image. Burkhardt was born in Switzerland and arrived in America in 1924...

Lithograph on paper, the image visually striking, of three zebras with their stripes, the sheet 18" by 22" (24 1/2" by 33" framed in quality black wood frame with linen liner and inner fillet), signed lower right and numbered 44/200 at lower left by the important Swiss modern artist HANS ERNI (1909-2015). The artist, deceased in 2015 at the impressive age of 106, had a long and distinguished career as painter, sculptor, and designer...

An oil on board painting, (19" by 16", and 27" by 23" framed), of a French landscape, by the French mid century impressionist artist ROGER ETIENNE (1922-2011). The painting is signed at lower left by the artist and dated there 1975, and at lower right he wrote a dedication to previous owners "Pour Balli & John". The scene, an avenue leading into a small town or village, is at once impressionist and also Expressionist, with strong brush strokes especially in sky, and some points of bright color. ...

A quite old pencil drawing on thin card, 8 1/2" by 5 1/2" inside the mat, 13" by 10 1/4" framed (no glass), apparently by a "Grandmother Stevenson" according to a notation on the reverse side of framing materials. Very faint, at the bottom of the reverse side of the card, in 19th century handwriting, is written: "All that is nature most I love, all the beautiful picture painted by the hand of Him who rests above"/Grandmother Stevenson." This phrase is written again in modern handwriting on th...

Oil on board painting of a waterside building with dirt road, small boat, fences and tree, extensive water in the distance, signed at lower left twice, with a signature that appears to be "M G Johnston". The work appears to be of a coastal New England view, which leads me to believe that it would be by the hand of listed artist MARY GRANT JOHNSTON of Massachusetts and New York, but I have no other works with which to compare it. The painting measures 11" by 15" and the narrow silver frame is...

The art of the native peoples of Australia has become very popular in recent years and works by major figures have achieved high prices. This work is unsigned and unattributed so is offered as a decorative piece. Measuring 19 1/2" by 23 1/4", the painting is acrylic on canvas laid against a wood panel. Condition is excellent. Ii would estimate the age as 1970's, possibly 1980's. The work came out of an estate in Corrales, New Mexico, near Albuquerque. This is an excellent decorative piece ...

Oil on canvas, 13" by 16" (17" by 20" as framed), the subject a glass compote filled with purple plums, the base surrounded by clusters of white and red currants, signed at lower left with a signature that appears to be "Bielard", "Bichard", or "Beclard" or possibly "Bulard". I don't see a listing for any such name but the artist was talented. I'd guess the age as circa 1920 to 1930's or so, judging from the technique, materials etc. The painting is in good condition, with just a pinpoint los...
