The work measures 9 3/4" by 19" inside the mat and 17 1/2" by 26 3/4" in excellent condition modern gold frame and clean mat with inner fillet. I have tried my best to figure out the identity of the artist and cannot do so; the artist might be anything from Belgian or Dutch to German or Eastern European...

Pastel on paper drawing of a rocky coastline with sailing craft offshore, apparently unsigned, 9 1/4" by 23", (16 3/4" by 31" as framed), circa 1900. The style of the drawing is reminiscent of that of American artists like Alfred Thompson Bricher (1837-1908). The popular and common pastel art of William Chandler also comes to mind. The work needs a new mat and the old acidic wood backing is best replaced. Otherwise for its age this work is in excellent condition.

The scene is likely to be of Colorado as there is an old framer's sticker from Turner Art Gallery of Denver. Below that is what appears to be a date, in pencil, "2-19-31". Even though the frame is mid century, it appears that the old original backing paper with label was retained when the work was re-framed...

A painting of the famous Andes mountain and lake resort of Bariloche in central Argentina, oil on canvas, 22" by 29", unframed, signed "MA" at lower right and "M. C. Alsina" on stretcher, circa 1960. The work is dusty and could benefit from a cleaning to remove foxing in the sky, and has some paint losses that can be easily restored (scratch at left and lower extreme corner). The deep blue of the sky against the gray of the mountains and lake makes for an elegant and satisfying color pairing...

Watt was trained at the Jepson Art Institute and also at the Art Center School of Design in Los Angeles. Instructors included Rico LeBrun, Lorser Feitelson, and Francis DeErdely. A modern unsigned painting, likely acrylic, the complex surface obviously worked and re-worked and built up by the artist----the piece, unframed, weighs nearly 9 pounds; that is a lot of paint. The measurements are 30" by 24". Despite the thickness of the paint, that paint appears to be stable. The generally monochromatic colors, bluish-gray/black, reminding of volcanic cindery glass, with other color showing through, should work well in a number of contemporary settings...

This is an antique photograph of earlier days on Charlotte Street, in the very historic town of Saint Augustine, Florida (which dates to 1565). For a long time I suspected this was Saint Augustine but recently I saw another example of this photograph, and in the margin it was titled "Charlotte Street, Saint Augustine". A very finished, beautifully executed pastel of a middle-aged lady, she nicely coiffed and elegant in appearance, the work signed at lower right "CARLES". I have researched the work, (including contacting an acknowledged expert on well-known Pennsylvania artist Arthur Carles Jr. 1882-1952) and she does not feel it has the characteristics to enable it to be called the work of that noted American painter. An unusual offering: a print of some type, appearing as lithograph but not, perhaps a Heliogravure or similar, with HAND COLORING IN PASTEL, the oval-shaped card on which this is created measuring 20" by 16", the entire wood apparently original early oval frame measuring 26 1/2" by 23 1/2". Research indicates this is after a Renoir original work "Portrait of a Girl Wearing a Charlotte", circa 1900, now in the collection of the Musee d'Orsay in Paris...

This is a museum poster or flyer issued by the Long Beach Museum of Art in 1972, advertising an exhibition that year of the paintings of the important and still highly underrated Swiss-California modernist HANS GUSTAV BURKHARDT (1904-1994).
