Good-sized watercolor painting of one of the famous canals of Venice, a gondolier and his vessel featured in the foreground, signed at lower left by the artist, B. Venuti. This work, 22" by 15" (31" by 23 1/2" in gilded old oak early twentieth century framing), probably dates to about the turn of the century. I do not see a listing for an artist by this name, though there is a "Benvenuti" who painted similar works, so I entertain the possibility that this might have been signed with a pen name...

A rarely seen work by a well-known artist of Romania, LETA MIRONESCU (1896-1981), the subject an autumn forest painted in greens and yellows and browns. Hidden among the vigorous impressionist brushwork on the old paperboard is the signature of the artist, in the paint, at lower left, where she also dated the work 1926. Mironescu received education in art in Romania and then traveled to Vienna, Munich and Paris for further training...

This is a truly antique work, an oil on canvas unframed painting, 24 1/2" by 30", relined in the mid 20th century, apparently unsigned, the subject elegant ladies in a formal, upper class interior setting, the piece likely English or Northern European, possibly but I think far less likely American...

This was probably preliminary art for a more finished drawing or painting by this well known freelance illustrator. The drawing contains a lot of detail for its modest size: five figures are about to eat soup from a cauldron at midday...

The artist painted in New England and specifically on Nantucket so this could well be coastal New England. The watercolor is signed at lower left by the listed Ohio and Pennsylvania artist RUFUS WAY SMITH (1840-1900)...

An oil on canvas painting, unsigned, the subject the Arizona desert (we know that because of the saguaro cacti that are not found elsewhere), 22" by 30" (29 1/2" by 38" framed). The painting is deliberately painted in a very pale fuzzy blonde light, with pastel tones, making it somewhat difficult to photograph due to the lack of strong contrasts. The materials suggest a circa 1950's or late 1940's date of execution.

An unusual item...a portion of a birthday or other festive cake on a plate, make of some kind of ceramic material, hand painted very realistically and capable of "fool the eye" (trompe l'oeil), painted in colors reminiscent of the colors used by famous contemporary artist Wayne Thiebaud. Measurements are approximately 8 1/2" across the plate, by 8" in height. The artist has hand signed her name on the bottom of the plate, in black marker...
