A fine 19th century miniature version of Gilbert Stuart's "Lansdowne" portrait, the iconic 1796 life size portrait of George Washington. The painting here is done in watercolor and gouache on organic wafer. From its origin until the present day many copies of the portrait have been made, but very few on ivory.

This 3 1/8" by 2 1/2" example is in excellent condition, with no issues. The 11" by 9 3/4" gilt over gesso frame is period and might be original.

Measurements are 16" by 12" and 18 1/2" by 14 1/2" in old wood framing. I would guess the age as circa 1930's or 1940's. While there are German artists that would correspond to this name, their work is unlike this piece...

Original old photo of the imposing Palace of Fine Arts building in the Marina section of San Francisco, the photo originally in a brown tone, enhanced tastefully with light blue tints. The building was erected for the 1915 Panama Pacific International Exposition in San Francisco, and the complex is all that remains of the construction undertaken for that event. Today it and the park-like grounds remain a graceful and familiar part of the San Francisco urban landscape...

KENWOOD GILES (1899/1900-1972), is this watercolor on paper painting, 14" by 19 1/2" inside the mat, 20 1/2" by 26 1/2" as framed, the subject several pink-walled, white-roofed island homes on a bluff overlooking the sea, flowering shrubs and bushes completing the happy scene. The paintings are not dated, but I believe they would have been created in the 1950's. Giles was a versatile English artist who lived in Bermuda from 1950 onward...
