A PAIR of detailed ink drawings, one titled "The Cottage", featuring a tidy home in the English countryside, the other a dated 1911 detailed look at a Gothic church's walls and entrance portal. Affixed to the crumbling old backing is a label for "The Cottage", showing it apparently won the "John J. Burnet Prize" for Alex Nicolson, who was evidently a student in "Club No. 129". So Nicolson was evidently a talented young artist...
PAIR of framed Paris scenes on board, one showing Notre Dame and the Seine, the other a street scene with a 1930's car and figures, each signed "Montal" at lower right. I would guess these are tourist pieces in the Montmartre painters tradition, probably dating to the 1950's or so. At 13 1/2" by 7 1/2" framed they are identical in size, and they are framed identically as well, though there is wear to each frame, showing as gold areas against a darker background...
Lithograph of a bull in what appears to be a stark Southwestern landscape, 12" by 13 3/4" as framed, pencil signed at lower right margin by listed WPA era American artist CHARLES EARLE MILLER (1907-) and with notation "Ed. 30" at center margin. The image is a very powerful one, similar to the work of Peter Hurd, in some ways. Miller was a painter, etcher and lithographer. I see a number of works online dated in the late 1930's and early 1940's, but after that the trail is difficult to follow...
An unframed oil on canvas landscape, 12 3/4" by 16", the subject a large lake in high country, a distant mountain in the background and tall spruce-type trees at left along the rocky shore. I have searched diligently for a signature and cannot find one, which is frustrating, as the work is certainly good enough to have been executed by a listed artist. The canvas was laid down on a board circa 1940 or so judging from the "Brownie Board" age...
A painting on light blue illustration board, sizable at 24" by 36" including its thin strip frame, signed at lower right by artist B. G. Dorsey. The subject is a white classic New England home with green shutters, pictured in early autumn, the trees turning colors. A lone figure seems to knit at the side of the house, a rowboat is tied up at the convenient dock, and a sailing craft and the ocean beyond appear at left. The idealized scene is classic Americana...
Nicely executed impressionist pastel drawing of coastal rocks and surf, 9" by 12" (14 1/2" by 17 1/2" framed), unsigned. This came from a collection of Northern California art, including pastel drawings by Carl Sammons, so I would at least entertain the possibility that he could have been the artist, but alas, this is truly unsigned. The work is on paper laid on a board. Condition is excellent with just a little contact with the old style non-glare glass, which should be replaced...
Etching, in a style that exhibits both the fine detail and subtle shading techniques of Rembrandt, the subject matter three human heads, one head of a goat, and one, a ram, by the French draftsman, etcher and engraver, JEAN-JACQUES DE BOISSIEU (1736-1810). The print, 6 1/4" by 8" inside the blue mat (10 1/2" by 13 1/2" framed), is signed at lower center just with initials, the "DB" conjoined, and is dated there 1803...
"William Hogarth" Frontispiece to Dr. Brook Taylor's Perspective The Works of William Hogarth" as published by Baldwin, Cradock and Joy in 1822 with the original plates restored by James Heath, engraver to His Majesty. The Heath edition was the last to print directly from Hogarth's original engraved plates. All William Hogarth prints appearing after this date are copies of these original graphic works of art. Heath edition 1822 An original copperplate engraving — over 195 years old...
A group of three small watercolors of scenes in rural Hambleden, England, by late 20th century English artist (Mrs.) P. Begley. The three each measure 5 1/2" by 8" (10 1/2" by 12 1/2" identically framed). Each is signed with conjoined initials PB in lower left corner and the artist wrote her address and titles on reverse backing. The works probably date to circa 1980. Pleasing scenes of the classic, peaceful countryside of England...
A 14" by 9 1/2" watercolor (25" by 20 1/2" framed) by a skilled mid to late 20th century artist, the subject the entry area and classic old style doorway of a 19th century American home...
"William Hogarth" Moses brought to Pharaoh's Daughter The Works of William Hogarth" as published by Baldwin, Cradock and Joy in 1822 with the original plates restored by James Heath, engraver to His Majesty. The Heath edition was the last to print directly from Hogarth's original engraved plates. All William Hogarth prints appearing after this date are copies of these original graphic works of art. Heath edition 1822 An original copperplate engraving — over 195 years old. Sheet size: approx. 1...
Old oil on canvas painting of light violet colored flowers in a yellow ceramic vessel, 13 1/2" by 17" (16 1/2" by 20" framed), signed at lower right corner with what appears as "M. Lagenbrucke" or similar, and dated adjacent 1924. I have looked for an artist by this name and to date have not found any information. He/she was talented and created an attractive work. In its nearly 100 years it has acquired considerable grime, and the surface is uneven and bearing hairline cracks in certain area...
Etching of children in a landscape, 8 1/4" by 10 3/4" inside the present mat (the full sheet 14 1/2" by 17"), not signed but printed information on mat provides artist name, a possible title "Hagyateki Anyaga" and possible edition ("5/50"). The artist is ISTVAN SZONYI (1894-1960). A student of Karoly Ferenczy at the Academy of Fine Arts in 1913, he had early exposure to the art colony at Nagybanya and its prominent and gifted figures, including greats such as Vilmos Aba Novak. Szonyi had his ...
PAIR of pastel drawings of stone buildings in Israel, each 13 1/4" by 9 1/4" (19" by 14 3/4" in simple light wood frames), each signed "N. Kobi", one dated '87, the other '89. I do not see a listing for the artist, who seems to have been skilled with pastel. Both works are clean. The frames have wear that could possibly be sanded out.
An original watercolor drawing of a familiar California theme: surfers at the beach, with lifeguard tower, palms, and two parked classic late 1940's Woodies vehicles. The work is signed at lower left "Dry......" ("Drysbock", or similar?) and measures 4 1/2" by 6 1/2". It comes matted but with no frame and glass. Likely is a contemporary work. Looks like a print but guaranteed to be original work.
Watercolor and ink on paper laid on illustration board, 17 1/2" by 23", unframed, the subject a rural road with houses, low mountains in the background, signed at lower right by California watercolor artist RITCHIE ALLEN BENSON (1941-1996). This is a nicely executed work and it is in excellent, fresh condition with no foxing nor water staining. Benson was born in the Los Angeles area and died in Washington state, but there is limited biographical information on him. He apparently worked mostly i...
Chromolithograph late 19th century print after a work by the noted German landscape artist THEODORE WEBER (1838-1907), the scene of the Italian coast, figures walking up a hillside road leading away from the sea, an ancient church steeple at left. The piece measures 18 3/4" by 12 1/2" inside the old mat, 28" by 21" in old gold frame, which shows its age with various chips and losses. Weber's oils and watercolors sell to about the $10,000 level at auctions. His style was finely detailed and ac...
Watercolor and ink on paper, 7 1/4" by 9 1/4", (13 1/2" by 15 1/2" in gold color metal frame), the subject a blue-striped lighthouse and keeper's home adjacent, signed at base of that lighthouse by California watercolor artist RITCHIE ALLEN BENSON (1941-1996). This is a nicely executed work and it is in excellent, fresh condition with no foxing nor water staining. Benson was born in the Los Angeles area and died in Washington state, but there is limited biographical information on him. He appar...
