A striking miniature with a good attribution to George Newcombe. As opposed to the more usual bust length rendering, this is a 3/4 length pose. That, combined with the style of the dress, intentionally gives a longer, or imposing, feel to the figure.

When the organic substrate of the painting was trimmed, it was done unevenly and close to an edge, so it could be framed better than in the current half of a travel case. Sight size is 3 1/8" by 2 1/2".

An antique painting of a classical landscape, the scene including feathery trees, a number of tiny figures, and a distant church, likely French or Italian, less likely English (the red tile roof, clothing styles), unsigned, painted on a board and set within an oval frame. The piece measures 13 5/8" by 16 3/8" including the antique frame. As might be expected of a work so old, the surface is soiled and there are some condition issues such as soiling, little to no varnish, a small dig with missi...

This etching appears at first glance to be almost certainly a work of famous Dutch artist Rembrandt van Rijn, but further study shows it to be a 19th century print by Chevalier IGNACE JOSEPH DE CLAUSSIN (1766-1844), ardent, eccentric artist in his own right and a scholar and copyist of graphic work by the Dutch master. De Claussin published in 1824 a catalogue raisonne that at the time was a major contribution to the scholarly study of Rembrandt's prints. De Claussin besides being a highly tal...
