A beautifully executed mixed media drawing of famous Spirit Island, one of the most photographed places in the Canadian Rockies, at Maligne Lake in Jasper National Park, Alberta, signed at lower right by talented artist Don Slote and dated there 4/1972. The work, primarily in pastel, with some pencil, measures 12" by 15" (19 1/2" by 22 1/2" framed). Condition of frame and art is excellent and fresh, belying its fifty years...

PAIR OF signed ink drawings with pencil underneath, each 7 1/2" by 6 1/2" and 13 1/2" by 11 1/2" as identically framed, the subjects famous clipper ships of the 19th century "Gamecock" and "Cutty Sark", each bearing a signature at lower right that could be interpreted as a "G" inside a square. Found in Maine, and said to have come from a Kennebunkport home, the artist who created the drawings might remain a mystery...

Champenois in Paris for the popular series "L'Estampe Moderne". The image is a dreamy one, with undertones of male and female sexuality. Note the elegant gray-brown colors and the blue and white highlights...

A detailed watercolor painting on paper, 8" by 10" (13" by 15" in interesting old faux-grain painted wood frame with gold liner), unsigned, with old handwritten title remaining affixed to backing: "Dublin Royal Hospital". The early, nineteenth century work is in excellent condition and the frame alone is unusual and interesting. Note the tiny figures, horses, and wheeled cart...

This is a nicely executed work in watercolor and gouache, depicting an Italianate landscape with majestic central tree, colorful wildflowers at left, and a distant view to the right, signed at extreme right corner "F. Pratesi". I do not see a listing for such a name, (that is, if I am reading it correctly). All photos are taken through the nasty old non-glare type glass, so actual sharpness of the image is even better than shown...

Late 19th century painting of the Roman Colosseum, an historical arch and surrounding gardens and park, signed at lower left "Conti". The piece, which measures 6 1/2" by 4 1/4" inside the mat, and 13 3/4" by 11 3/4" as framed in polished, shiny reddish-brown wood, displays exceptionally fine detail despite its small size. The colors are sharp and fresh and the paper not oxidized...

One of a number of Whistler lithographs I am offering: "Firelight: Joseph Pennell No. 1", 1896, sheet approximately measuring 13 3/4" by 10 1/4", currently in a mat with window, hinged at top edge, not laid down, unframed. Generally clean, with some imperfections along edges. Whistler created some 179 lithographs in his career, in addition to more graphic art as etchings, along with paintings, pastels, and watercolor...

A woodblock print with vivid PRINTED blue, red, green and yellow colors (NOT hand coloring), the subject a street scene in a German town, with extensive pencil writing in the bottom margin and what appears to be the date 1909. I showed images of this old style Germanic handwriting to Galerie Bassenge in Berlin and they were also unable to determine an artist name, but the writing is "Linolschnitt Orig. Handdruck...Alt Bielefeld…Bachstrasse...1909" (linocut, hand printed, Alt Bielefeld, etc.)...

This is a very finely executed watercolor on paper of a young woman in the clothing of the old country. I've opened this up and see that the work is on paper laid on a board, and it is not signed. The measurements inside the gold mat are 9 1/4" by 7 1/4" (17" by 13" in ornate old frame). I am sure, given the quality of the work (note the care lavished on the eyes and face, in particular), that the artist would be someone recognized and listed...

This is a lithograph of a partially nude, seated young woman, 20" by 17 1/4" (30" by 27 1/2" as framed), signed in pencil at lower right and numbered 244/300 at lower left, by the noted 20th century American artist RAPHAEL SOYER (1899-1987). Soyer, one of several brothers (the others being Isaac and Moses) who became significant figures in American art during the WPA and mid century period, became known for his sensitive studies of human figures in urban settings and interiors...

This is a wall-ready unusually fresh and clean lithograph, hand colored, titled "Millard Fillmore/Whig Candidate for Vice President", by New York competitors to Nathaniel Currier, J. Baillie and Company. The coloring is green in the curtains and just a hint of blush on the cheeks. Size is 13" by 9" inside the double mat. There is clean double matting (rich forest green matching the curtains and inner mat is tan), and the black frame with a bit of gold inner edge...

Drawing (charcoal) of Donald Duck, signed "Roy", and with "HI HENRY" at top, the work, the sheet 9 3/4" by 6", presently simply framed for protection only...

Coastal watercolor and gouache painting, the scene likely of the New England shoreline, perhaps near Boston, waves breaking on a beach with rocky outcroppings, signed at lower right corner by artist SHARP. The painted area of the work measures 6" by 12", the sheet on which it is painted 8 3/4" by 14 3/4". The painted area is not a separate sheet laid down to a backing----it is all one sheet. There is staining of the left margin area but this is not of importance since freshly matted with arch...

A pleasant watercolor painting of a working windmill in an extensive landscape, the sheet 9 3/4" by 13 1/4", currently loose under a mat, no frame, signed at lower left by listed English artist ALFRED WILLIAM RICH (1856-1921). Other than normal age toning of the paper, there are several spots of foxing, a missing extreme upper right corner, which is easily hidden by the mat, and reverse browning from residue of varnish or old adhesive. The watercolor is firmly in the tradition of English water...

Three small watercolor paintings of classic scenes of Japan, two signed by artist "Kyo" or similar, each measuring 6 1/4" by 2 7/8". The three are mounted together and framed as one (measuring 13" by 20 1/2"). One painting is of a peaceful village scene; one of a small platform with lanterns; and one of a torii gate. These likely date to the early years of the 20th century. Condition is excellent. The frame has some beading loss, especially at lower left. I have one of the missing pieces ...

Painting on coarse burlap of an angel girl-child, 24" by 18" (32" by 26" in the original Mexican wood frame), in the highly recognizable style of noted Mexican artist JOSE MARIA DE SERVIN (1917-1983). The artist, who was actually born in Michigan, was taken at the age of two months to Guadalajara, where he was to become well known as a painter, sculptor, and muralist. Early in life he was a member of Young Painters of Jalisco, and went on to assist the great Orozco on a mural at the Legislativ...

In the style of an artist like Stark Davis is this 15 1/2" by 19 1/2" gouache painting, gold paint used for the background to the parrot and vegetation, possibly oleander, the work signed at lower left "O. Schroeter". This is a work dating to about the late 1930's to about 1950, by listed artist OTTO FELIX SCHROETER (born circa 1880 in Germany, died circa 1965 in California). Schroeter was possibly familiar with the works of Stark Davis, who painted such scenes in the first half of the century...
