The Maid Oil on board 9 ¾” x 15” unframed Max Carlier is one of the great still life masters of Belgium. He was born in Tourcoing, Belgium in 1872 and died in Schaarbeck in Brabant in 1938. Carlier was a painter of the Belgian School who most typically executed still lifes of florals and fruits. He also painted genre scenes and interiors with equal skill. He lived and worked primarily in Brussels, but traveled extensively throughout Europe, especially Italy...

Attributed to Henri-Alphonse Barnoin, French, 1882-1935. "Marché du plage de Concarneau", depicting the seaside market outside the Brittany fishing village of Concarneau. The town is clearly identifiable from the distinctive town ramparts and tower in the background. In the foreground, Breton women in traditional dress gather to buy and sell foodstuffs while a few fisherman in small boats work at the shore. The loose brushwork is more in the style of Barnoin's pastels and gouaches...

A fine print from New Orleans by the noted Louisiana-associated artist LOUIS OSCAR GRIFFITH (1875-1956), featuring a milk cart drawn by a horse, making its deliveries in the French Quarter. Measuring 12 1/2" by 10 1/4" inside the existing mat (19 1/2" by 15 1/4" as framed), the piece is pencil signed by the artist at lower right and numbered at lower left "No. 21" (of an apparent edition of 100). By the famous and important American-born artist who lived much of his life in Europe, this is a PAIR of unframed portrait paintings of a middle aged man and middle aged woman, one signed on the reverse "Cucuel" and dated there 1934, the other not signed. The portrait of the man (on the reverse of which is a lightly sketched out female face) measures 30" by 25 1/2" and that of the woman 25 1/2" by 20". These are works by the important San Francisco born artist EDWARD ALFRED CUCUEL (1875-1954)...

Harold Kerr Eby 1889-1946 American This is an original etching and aquatint by American artist Kerr Eby. The title is Refugees, a study from his series of WWI images that he created as a War Artist. This pencil signed impression has an image size of 9 15/16X14 7/8 inches. This impression was last sold by Keppel in New York, it came to us in the original frame. A dramatic rich impression printed by the artist himself.

Percival Gaskell, Etching, "In the Garden," This very fine impression with its deep rich tones measures 11 3/4 x 7 3/4 inches, c. 1930. Presented on cream wove paper, this original drypoint has wide margins with a sheet size of 15 1/2 x 10 1/4 inches and is pencil signed on the lower border. Born in England and educated in Cambridge, Gaskell studied art in London and Italy before studying under Sir Frank Short at the Royal College of Art.

Circa 1940's oil on canvas floral still life painting, 24" by 30", signed at lower right Helen Hayes. This is a competently painted work that has seen some neglect. Sold in as-is condition, since the bottom roughly five inches, as shown in the photos, has significant pinpoint losses. Each is small but the overall effect is almost as if someone dipped the painting in water, leaving a "bathtub ring". Study the photos carefully...

Old watercolor painting of yellow daffodils in a green vase, 13 3/4" by 13" (19 1/2" by 19" in old, likely original frame), signed at lower right "KAY". There are a number of last names of listed artist by that name, but it would be difficult to point to any particular one as our painter. The work likely dates to about 1930 give or take about ten years. The color scheme and framing, not to mention the pottery vase, really give a feeling of Arts and Crafts. Would work well in a Mission style ...
